NSF Grant Helping Expand Towson University’s CyberCorps Program

For the next five years, Towson University will be able to expand its CyberCorps program thanks to a $3.9 million grant from the National Science Foundation. The grant aims to support 32 more computer science professionals and develop a pathway between Towson, a National CyberWatch member, and the Community College of Baltimore County. Some funds also will be used to host a cybersecurity education workshop.

Melding Cybersecurity Into a Mainstream Computer Science Education

The Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) Committee for Computing Education in the Community College has developed the Computer Science Curricular Guidance for Associate Degree Transfer Programs with Infused Cybersecurity guidelines. With the importance of computer security knowledge in the working world, this curriculum will be even more important for associate-degree seeking students.

Thomas Nelson Community College Earns National Designation

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC), a National CyberWatch member, announced it received a new designation as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense by the National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security. TNCC worked for more than a year on the application to become the fifth community college in Virginia to earn this recognition and hopes it will increase interest in the field.

National CyberWatch Member Site Launched

The wait is over. National CyberWatch members now have a central location to facilitate communication, propagate ideas and post and share events. Members are receiving login credentials, which will allow posting about program news and contributing opinions on the Forum, among other benefits. Designated faculty contacts also will be able to add other faculty as members under their respective institutions.

George Washington University Using CyberCorps Alumni to Teach

To further aid community colleges in teaching cybersecurity, George Washington University is piloting a project to use its CyberCorps alumni employed as cybersecurity professionals as potential adjunct faculty. An online course, with help from community college faculty and staff, will guide these potential teachers to creating a productive classroom environment catered to specific colleges.

Women in Cybersecurity

Network, converse and get to know women in cybersecurity from non-profit, academia, for-profit, and government organizations at the Women’s Connect at ISSA Metro Atlanta Annual Conference on Nov. 15. This special free event, open to men and women, includes a Women CISOs panel, guest speaker is Ms. Deidre Diamond, founder and CEO of CyberSN and brainbabe, tabletop expo, networking, and giveaways.

CyberWatch West Tool Helps Grant College Credit to U.S. Veterans

CyberWatch West’s Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) Pathways tool provides guidance on which military positions are generally equivalent to common information technology and cybersecurity courses. The tool identifies equivalencies for specific jobs in the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy. Colleges can download a free PDF version or refer to the online version on the CyberWatch West website.
