Collaborative Forces of NOVA and CyberForce LLC
Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), a National Cyber Watch member, and CyberForce LLC have combined efforts to create a Cybersecurity Center of Excellence and Lab for Critical Infrastructure (CCoE). This collaboration will focus on Industrial Control Systems (ICS) Cybersecurity and will have modular environments for critical infrastructure industry sectors such as electric utilities, oil and gas, and chemical and water.

Cybersecurity Master’s Degree Now Offered at Hood College
This fall, National CyberWatch member Hood College in Maryland began offering a master’s degree program in cybersecurity. Students will build relationships with local companies through a team-based capstone after learning about computer forensics, defending networks and firewalls, and configuring and deploying new systems. This 30-credit program was designed for technical and non-technical students with a bachelor’s degree from different disciplines.

CyberHer—Gateway for Girls to Become Women in Cybersecurity
The winner of the National CyberWatch Center’s Innovation in Cybersecurity Education Award—the Cyber Warrior Princess (CWP) project—is being launched. To help encourage girls in the STEM field, this project will educate girls in grades sixth through 12th about the simple prevalence of cybersecurity in their lives. By leveraging the girls’ interest in online gaming, the CWP is helping students work together and understand cybersecurity in a new light.

Losing the Privacy War Webinar
Join Dr. Margaret Leary, CIPP/G and professor at Northern Virginia Community College, as she discusses the recent Equifax breach during a National CyberWatch Center webinar on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2-3 p.m. Dr. Leary will look at the relationship of online public records accessed by data aggregators (such as Equifax), potential negative impacts of a Federal Breach Notification Law and recommendations for individuals to protect their identity.

Inspiring The Next Generation of Cyber Stars
Have an idea or proposal for the GenCyber Program? The National Security Agency is soliciting proposals from universities, public or private schools, and not-for-profit institutions. GenCyber aims to improve cybersecurity education in the U.S. through its free summer camps for students from elementary school to high school as well as teachers. Camps focus on engaging students with cybersecurity principles and teaching techniques.

China’s Quest to Becoming a Cyber Superpower
One up-and-coming country in the cybersecurity arena is China. They’re aiming to go from a cyber power to a cyber superpower. In this article, China has a four-pronged approach to developing this strength including protecting critical information infrastructure; developing an independent tech base for the internet; managing internet content and creating positive energy online; and increasing the country’s role in building and operating the internet globally.
