Dancing with Nature

April 2017 Issue 2 Vol 7
News, Life and the Art Culture in the Smoky Mountains

What a glorious spring it has been!

==John Smith==
Despite March's big snow and super frigid temps, the blossoms have not failed to disappoint. The grape hyacinths and woodland violets have been extraordinary. Always an extended process, the buds continue to pop out with each day. Spring is nature's gift to us after enduring the challenges of winter.

Our first Art After Dark is just around the corner and we have a special evening planned with Teri Siewert's encaustic paintings and guest pianist Judy Phillips from Pensacola, FL.  There are more details about May's Art After Dark below. And from there it's "hold onto our hats" as this night kicks off a string of special events taking us to Christmas ...... and this year we do not stop there.

==Lucid Designs==
New works reflecting the arrival of spring from our artists are arrivi

Wishing you the joys of springtime's rebirth.
We look forward to seeing you soon!

All be best

Art After Dark
Teri Siewart
Multimedia Artist

Multimedia artist Teri Siewert will be doing an encaustic printing demo using the hotbox and Japanese papers at Twigs and Leaves Gallery during Art After Dark Friday evening, May 5, 6-9PM.   A Waynesville and gallery resident, Teri uses an inspired blend of beeswax and damar resin to create luminous and ethereal artwork. Teri Siewert will be returning for Kids on Main Block Party on May 27th, 6-7 to do hotbox prints with the children.

t. e. always knew she had an artist's heart. She raised 5 children while working as an RN for 27 years, but continued to dream of being an artist. In 2007, she started Wallchemy, a decorative finishes business in Orlando, where she studied with the top designers, finishers and artists in the country. A chance visit to Asheville's RAD in 2010, where she saw encaustic for the first time, was the springboard for a life change.

Inspired by the words of poet e.e. cummings, "...remember one thing only: that  it's you-nobody else-who determines your destiny and decides your fate. Nobody else can be alive for you; nor can you be alive for anybody else.", she moved to the mountains and devoted all her time to painting with wax mediums. This led to the development of a signature series of ethereal landscapes and abstract paintings that have found new homes in private collections all over the country. t.e. hopes all will be inspired to find their muse(s) and be alive!

We will recognizing National Tourism "Faces of Travels" during Art After Dark which is part of the annual National Travel and Tourism Week (May 7-13), which unites communities across the country to celebrate what travel means to American jobs, economic growth and personal well-being.

Friday evening, as you stroll through the gallery's 140+ primarily regional artists, enjoy piano music by Pensacola, FL's Judy Phillips and delight in the savory hors d'eurves.

Spotlight
Julie Bagamary
Fiber Artist
Julie Bagamary's passion is to offer beautiful and uplifting fiber art that combines time honored quilting and embroidery with modern techniques, vibrant colors and arrangements that demonstrate her love for nature.

Julie's first remembrance of hand sewing was at age 9 while visiting her Granny.  At the age of 12, she received her first sewing machine as a Christmas gift. Later, on her honeymoon, she fell in love with the mountains of NC.  She moved here shortly afterward where the beauty of nature and experiencing the four seasons greatly influence her art.

Creations primarily use specialty batik and hand dyed and painted fabrics.   Hand and machine stitching complete each piece.  Antique buttons often show up in her art as well.

"My goal is for others to be encouraged by nature represented in fiber arts," Julie says.

Stop by the Twigs and Leaves Gallery to experience Julie's work first hand and to choose a piece to take home with you.
