Thursday, August 15 (giovedi'15 agosto)
11am to 4pm
Rosedale Park, Pavilion A, 8200 Old Philadelphia Rd, Baltimore
In Italia, Ferragosto is a national holiday celebrated on August 15th at the beach or in the mountains with picnics and all-day celebrations. All of Italy shuts down to enjoy it! You should too! Divertiamoci!
Bring a covered dish!
Grills provided!
This is a fundraiser for the Pandola Learning Center in Little Italy - a donation of $5 or more is appreciated.
History of Ferragosto
Ferragosto derives from the Latin expression feriae Augusti' - Augustus' rest. It is a festivity created by Emperor Augustus in 18BC, an addition to the existing ancient Roman festivals such as Vinalia Rustica and Consualia' to celebrate the harvest and end of agricultural tasks. The purpose of linking the August festivities was to provide a suitable period of rest, necessary after the hard labor of the previous weeks.
In religion, The Catholic Church celebrates this date as a Holy Day of Obligation to commemorate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the Roman Empire it was celebrated to honor the gods, in particular Diana, and the cycle of fertility and ripening.
Between August 15-25, the majority of the work force in Italy stops, Italians go on vacation (Ferie di Ferragosto - Ferragosto's Holidays). Cities become empty, bars, restaurants and stores close, vacation places become crowded. During this time there are events such as culinary fairs, religious feasts and popular holidays that take place in paese. Among the merriment is the most beautiful public holiday - Il Palio di Siena - a medieval holiday on August 16 in Siena. Its culminating point is the horse race.

LIPOA (Little Italy Property Owners Association) has just received a shipment of 1,000 lightbulbs to keep the iconic string lights on in The Neighborhood. The money came from the hard work of the Mother's Day Bake Sale headed by Barbara Stone and Mary Ann Campanella. The labor will come from the hard work of Bob Marsili and his helpers. Look UP soon for the results!
MORE from LIPOA ... The LIPOA Safety Committee (formerly headed by the late Matt Hersl) is now in capable hands with PJ ONeill. Committee members have been attending the Southeast District monthly meetings and gaining valuable insight on working with the police and the State's Attorney concerning safety matters.

"Just got your newsletter and you've convinced me: I'm planning to take the bargain bus down to Baltimore on Sunday, August
18, go to the O's game in the early afternoon and the Feast [of St. Gabriele] afterwards. And perhaps I'll write something up and get it in one of the New York area newspapers and get
you folks some free publicity.
I even have the lead-in line:
'There are five great American cities between Maine and Virginia. The one you know the least about has the prettiest modern ballpark, and the neatest Little Italy ...'"
