Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Hello from Juneau! I’m excited to reach out to you with my first legislative newsletter! Session is now in full swing, the office is geared up, and I'm here in our capital city proudly serving District 22.

In addition to addressing our state's budget issues, my top reason for being here is to ensure you have a voice in shaping our state's future. I will always be accessible and look forward to hearing your thoughts, ideas and suggestions for a better Alaska.

Meet the Team

It's been an incredibly busy start to session, but I'm thankful to have a great team on board! If you find yourself in the Capitol, make sure to visit us in Room 418, or give us a call any time at (907) 465-3892. You'll be in good hands!
Team Grenn from left to right:
Ryan Johnston (year-round staff), Joe Caissie (session staff), Rep. Jason Grenn, Brooke Ivy (chief of staff), James Holzenberg (legislative intern).
While it's certainly busy around here, I will always make time for you, so don't hesitate to let me know if you'll be in Juneau or if you'd like to set up time to talk by phone from Anchorage.

House Finance Committee

With meetings every day (sometimes twice a day!), I’ve hit the ground running in House Finance. The  main task of this committee is to take a detailed look at the budgets for each state department and to examine the financial impact of bills before they are voted on by the full House of Representatives.
As the chair of two budget subcommittees (Department of Law and Department of Administration), I'm examining those budgets particularly closely. I'm already in the process of hosting hearings, and between working with department representatives and committee members, it will by my job to find which programs in those departments could be serving Alaskans better, or perhaps aren’t priorities right now in our current fiscal situation.

Conflict of Interest Legislation

While my primary focus this session is working on finding budget solutions, I’ve had the opportunity to file three bills already: House Bill 43, House Bill 44 and House Concurrent Resolution 1.

HB44 and HCR1 are two pieces of legislation pointed at creating more transparency in the legislature. HB44 would make changes that would better define when a legislator has a personal conflict of interest that they should announce before voting on a bill. HCR1 would update the Alaska Uniform Rules (rules of the Legislature) to ensure these conflicts are explained on the record and properly voted on by legislators for the public to see.
Now more than ever, I believe it's important for the legislature to build public trust and increase transparency in their actions. It was my goal to start this conversation and I look forward to continuing the discussion as we move through the committee process.

I am happy to announce that both HB44 and HCR1 passed out of the House Judiciary Committee on Friday, and will move on to House State Affairs Committee this week.

Keeping Track

Interested in tracking my bills through the legislative process? Please let me know and we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop. You can also follow along on BASIS: http://www.akleg.gov/basis/Home/BillsandLaws. Just type in a bill number (HB44) in the search bar at the top of the page. If you have trouble finding what you're looking for, just give my office a call and we'd be happy to help!

Having people from home stop by the office is the best part of the job. Always happy to meet with constituents!

Finally, I wanted to thank you for taking the time to read this update. Representing our neighborhood is exciting and challenging. And I want to make sure you are involved in the decisions being made here in Juneau. Please take a few minutes to take my "Important Alaskan Issues" survey. Your input will help me better represent you.

Best regards,
