An
interesting fact about llamas is that they are used to guard herds of sheep.
"Llamas are specifically useful as deterrents to coyotes because they have no fear of dogs" says
Jeff Hasbrouck of Double J Farms and Feeding in Colorado.
Hasbrouck said he decided to employ llamas as guards after a friend of his said he once saw a llama jump a fence to protect a chicken coop from coyotes. Not long after, Hasbrouck bought some llamas to help fend off and control the predators at his sheep feedlot.
Hasbrouck has about 40,000 sheep to watch over, so extra eyes that tower over the herd and
can see into the distance to spot approaching trouble are always helpful.
Judy Glaser who owns a llama farm in Kiowa tells us that llamas have very independent personalities.
"If you understand the personality of a cat, that's a llama," she said. "Where dogs have owners, cats have staff . Llamas have staff."
