From Mr. Rutherford
I am looking forward to welcoming back our returning families and all new students and parents. We have been busy getting ready for the start of the new year.

This year welcomes our first high school class, as well as many new teachers and staff, including Mrs. McKay, Mr. Schaffer, Dr. Parlin, Mr. Ritter, Mrs. Smith, and Mrs. Richards. We are also pleased to introduce the house system, featuring three houses: House of Saul of Tarsus, Washington House, and Chesterton House. The houses will serve to foster friendship and loyalty, develop leadership skills, promote competition, and offer intramural athletics.

From new carpeting, a fence, and remodeled offices to more than 25 new students, new teachers, and new grades, rest assured that your school is continuing to grow and develop in a thoughtful manner, always keeping our mission at the forefront: the cultivation of knowledge and virtue.  We have ambitious goals and big dreams for the Academy, and we are pleased and excited that you will be with us to share in the adventure.

Ben Rutherford, Headmaster
Introducing the Academy's House System

If you thought the house system was first created by the Harry Potter series, think again.  The house system is a centuries-old feature of classical schools used widely in Great Britain and schools modeled after the British system.  The system was initially implemented in boarding schools where students actually ate, drank, and slept in individual houses during the school term.  The house system is designed to encourage and increase camaraderie, mentorship, leadership, and competition and to foster loyalty, school pride, and tradition.

We are very excited to announce the inception of our house system this fall. Our houses are named after historical figures who sought to adhere to the virtues we seek to instill in every Veritas student.  We have three houses: Washington, Saul of Tarsus, and Chesterton.  Each house has its own house crest, symbols, and colors and will develop its own traditions.  Your house is like a family within the larger Academy community, and the members of each house are there to encourage one another to do their best in all endeavors.

The houses will compete for points earned through academic and athletic achievement, community service, and virtuous conduct.  Points may also be deducted for poor conduct. The points tally will be posted on the school website and Facebook page regularly.  At the end of the year, the house with the most points shall be awarded the House Cup.

Students will be assigned to their houses at the beginning of this school year. Stay tuned for additional details about our house system!
Introducing New Teacher Aides

The kiddos in Mrs. Gale's class will have a new teacher aide to help them navigate through PreK and Kindergarten.  Please help us welcome Mrs. Rachelle Smith.  For several years Mrs. Smith used the classical model to educate her four children.  She has a Bachelor's Degree in English from Marietta College and has completed Master's Degree courses in education from Indiana Wesleyan University.  Her children now attend Veritas Classical Academy. She and her husband live in Marietta, Ohio where she spends her spare time cooking, reading, and renovating their century-old home.

Students in 1st and 2nd grade will also have a new teacher aide this year.  Mrs. Karen Richards and her husband live in Parkersburg, West Virginia where she has devoted her life to raising their four children. She has worked and volunteered at Ohio University, area elementary schools, and her church.  Mrs. Richards is excited to put her passion for children's education into action this fall in Mrs. Nestor's classroom.

We welcome both of them to our school community.
