NEW BIG BAND

"Ateña"

" Atena", is a funky guajira which my 70's group "Urban Ensemble" often used as a set opener because of the impact & energy of the 6/8 intro into 4/4 melody sections. With a somewhat "singable" melody, this piece was composed on a melodica, while I sat on a rock on the beach, and watched the tankers sail past the isle of Mikonos into the Mediterranean sunset. In the summer of '77, I was backpacking around Europe with friends, and had just left Athens where I was deeply moved by the rich history, the beautiful people, and the ideals of the democratic dream - so clearly a part of the Greek culture. It seems to me, we are all still working out the freedoms which come with a true democracy: where all the people vote regardless of race, religion, gender, or previous social experience. (My special thanks to Steve Alcalá and his friends for their recording of this arrangement!)"

Biography

Born in 1951, composer/drummer/educator/producer ROLAND VAZQUEZ worked after high school in R&B and rock bands around LA. As a member of Clare Fischer's all-star band "Salsa Picante" ('78-81), he played on the Grammy winning "Salsa Picante 2+2." A recipient of a NEA Jazz Grant in 1977, he completed a series of recordings which led to the album, "Urban Ensemble" (called "a decade ahead of its time" by Billboard Magazine). Moving to NYC in '81, his bands regularly performed at Seventh Avenue South, Mikell's, The Bottom Line, and The Lone Star Café - as well as regional and international concert venues. His works for octet, quintet, and big band are featured on his albums  "The Tides of Time" ('88); "No Separate Love" ('91); and "Further Dance" ('97). After receiving his MM at Manhattan School of Music in '85, he joined that school's Jazz Faculty, where he taught ensembles ('88-'99),

During the '90's his music began leaning more towards chamber music ("Piano Analogies"; "Further Dance" & "The Blue Field"). In '99, The Illinois Philharmonic premiered Vazquez' "Ghost in the Mountain" (for string quartet & orchestra): his symphonic reflection on the life of Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata. In 2000, he and his wife (composer/performer Susan Botti) accepted positions at the University of Michigan; where he taught jazz composition classes; initiated the school's first Latin Jazz Ensemble; co-directed the Creative Arts Orchestra; directed the combo program; and presented "Intro to Latin Music" a 14 lecture "historical perspective" at the U of M's Ethnic Studies/American Culture wing.
