Rector's Reflections

TRACES OF LIGHT

Amid our broken world we proclaim that the prince of peace is born among us. God comes to us in human flesh-in Christ's body and blood-so that we may be bearers of divine light to all the world. But daily headlines remind us of today's darkness, which Henri Nouwen says "is so visible and tangible . . . that it is often difficult to believe that there is much to think, speak, or write about other than our brokenness" (Life of the Beloved, New York: Crossroad, 1992, p. 69).

But it is into this brokenness that the life and light of the world descends, not to terrify or shame it, but to create it anew. From the beginning this Word was active in creation, speaking obliquely to every culture and era, until the particular time of incarnation. God risks vulnerability in order to reach out to the wounded, and places in creation's trust the caretaking of a fragile grace. Will the world receive him?

The rest of the story will painfully answer this question. Events at Gethsemane, Gabbatha, and Golgotha will dramatically declare our rejection of the life and light of the world. But the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness does not overcome it. We wrestle with the paradox that the world did not recognize its own light by which it sees, or its own life from which it has life, or the Word that gives it meaning. Yet we also treasure the wonder by which we have been granted eyes to see and ears to hear. At Christmas we perceive the light in infancy, but, grace upon grace, he is a trace of joy given for us. (Sundays and Seasons, 2016)

CHRISTMAS EVE - We gather at 5:00 and 10:00 pm on a long winter's night to proclaim the coming of the light. Isaiah announces that the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. Paul reminds us that the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all. In the familiar account of Christ's birth, the evening sky is bright with the heavenly host singing, "Glory to God in the highest."

CHRISTMAS DAY - We gather for one service at 9:00 am on a Christmas Sunday morning as the people of God to celebrate the birth of the Word made flesh, Christ our Lord. This year you are encouraged to come as you are (in your pajamas, robe and slippers, or blue jeans and flannel) for a service of lessons and carols with champagne communion to celebrate the dawn of the light of the world born to shine in our weary world.

See you in Worship!
Bill+

Gracious God of heaven and earth, you have thrown a lifeline to us in our darkness- a beam of light that shines through Jesus. Though born in a manger, he is the firstborn of all creation. Though crucified on a cross, he is the Lord of life. Fill us with the wonder and joy of his presence in the world and in our hearts. Amen

NEW BIBLE STUDY Starts on Thursday, January 5th.
Join us as we more deeply into God's Word. We will walk through Romans to bring contemporary application of Scripture to life. Discover how you can participate more fully in God's kingdom as we read through Paul's letter to the Romans. We gather Thursday afternoons 3:00-4:00 pm followed by a brief Eucharist in the Beck Memorial Library.

Kids4Peace

KIDS4PEACE is the international program that brings Jewish, Muslim, and Christian middle schoolers to the U.S. in a relationship that begins with summer camp (in New Hampshire at the Barbara Harris Camp and Conference Center) and continues with mentoring relationships and education over several years, making these young people ambassadors for peace in a troubled part of the world, the birthplace of Jesus. The Mission Outreach Team has recommended we dedicate our Christmas offering to this non-profit  whose director is the Rev. Josh Thomas, who graduated from Dartmouth and served as campus and young adult missioner in the New Hampshire diocese before joining Kids4Peace. If you are unable to attend one of our Christmas Services, please send your check to All Saints Episcopal Church, PO Box 359, Wolfeboro, NH 03894. Write Kids4Peace on the memo line.

Michael Scadron with son, Travis

Michael returned to his east coast roots when he moved to our area in June of 2015.  Michael previously lived in Bloomfield Hills Michigan, and was a member of Christ Church Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills.  At Christ Church Cranbrook, Michael served on the Vestry, was a member of the choir, and also served as an Eucharistic Minister.  Michael is continuing his ministry at All Saints, as an Eucharistic Minister.  Travis is a graduate of the University of Michigan, and worked in China for three years.  In January, he will be starting graduate school at the University of Cape Town in South Africa.  Welcome Michael,  we are grateful for your ministry at All Saints, and that you are worshipping with us.

Don and Sandi Johnson

This week our camera found All Saints leaders, Don and Sandi Johnson.  They are from Kansas City, Missouri and have been attending All Saints for twenty years.    Sandi is involved in much of what transpires at All Saints.  She gives copious hours to Lord and Tailor, and is the new co-director of that organization. She is an Eucharistic Minister, a member of ECW, Flower Delivery, and Women's Worship.  She is licensed to lead Worship, and last Sunday teamed with Cate McMahon to lead both the 8 and 10 AM Morning Prayer: Rite Two Services.  Don is an Eucharistic Minister, a member of the Men's Bible Study, a member of the Choir, and an Office Angel.  The 10 AM Service officially begins when Don announces to the congregation the name and page number of the Processional Hymn.  Thank-you Sandi and Don for your years of devoted ministry to All Saints.
  Hanging of the Greens

The Hanging of the Greens took place on Monday, December 19th.  A couple of dozen All Sainters transformed the church for Christmas Eve and Christmas Services.  In the above photo, Carolyn Sundquist and Joanne Crowe decorate a *Chrismon tree.

*"A Chrismon tree is an evergreen tree often found in the Chancel or Nave of a church during Advent and Christmastide. The Chrismon tree symbolizes the eternal life Jesus Christ provides and is decorated with white lights and white and gold "chrismons" ancient symbols for Christ or some part of Christ's ministry from star to cross."
Rev. Bill Petersen, e-News Dec. 16th.

In the photo below, Stanley Anderson and Lee White place garland on the choir loft railing.

Brochures

In the above photo, Susie Walker places a new brochure in a pew.

"After several meetings with lots of good discussion, our All Saints brochure has been updated by a subcommittee of the Welcome Team, comprised of Susie and Peter Walker, Christy Parker, Phil Wasmuth and Sarah Day.  Please look for it in the pews.  You will see that new photos have been added. Also, by switching to a local printer, we were able to insure the photographs were all crystal clear."
