Leadership Lessons from the Presidents
Overcoming the Crucibles of Life to Find Success

Bestselling author and historian Doris Kearns Goodwin explains the leadership lessons she has learned from over 40 years of studying United States Presidents. Chief among these lessons is the importance of persisting through adversity. May we use this Presidents' Day as an opportunity to learn from the important leaders of the past, applying those lessons in our efforts to shape the future.
New Committees Formed For 2018
Are You Ready To Get Involved?
Committees have long been an important part of the chamber with some in place for many years and others formed to tackle a specific issue or project.

2018 marks the launch of a new, revamped list of committees that have been formed based on your input, lots of research, feedback from other chambers and an overall goal of having relevant, important issues and topics addressed on a regular basis. This is the place where you can put your passion, interests and expertise to good use and truly get engaged in the chamber and business communities. The goal is not to just add another meeting to your schedule but to bring together committed, working groups who set goals, large and small, and make sure they are met.

Please take a look at the attached 2018 Committee List by clicking here . You'll see some long-standing committees in addition to new ones. Email Tricia Maple directly, at [email protected], if you have an interest in serving on or chairing a committee or if you have questions. We look forward to your input and energy as the new committees come together.

Ohio Chamber Testifies
In Support of HB 98

The Ohio Chamber of Commerce recently testified at the Senate Education Committee in support of House Bill 98. This bill provides access to representatives of businesses or institutions of higher education that wish to present possible opportunities to high school students.

This is very timely legislation, in that workforce development and finding workers to meet the demands of businesses for present and future needs is an immense challenge for nearly every employer.

At a time that businesses are having difficulty finding a qualified workforce, this will provide much needed information for prospective students that may not be aware of all the opportunities for training and employment that are available to them.

The Ohio Chamber believes that having guaranteed access to high school students gives employers the ability to educate and inform students of the sustainable, good paying in-demand jobs that could be available to them in the future.

30 Years, 300 Jobs: How One Immigrant Entrepreneur Built a Booming Pittsburgh Business through Trade and Innovation

When Lalit Chordia left India in the 1980s to pursue a PhD at Carnegie Mellon University, he had every intention of returning home after graduation. That was 30 years ago, and he says he’s not going anywhere now.

He’s a Pittsburgh Steelers season ticket holder now, and on the board of his local children’s hospital. On Friday nights you can often find him at Donato’s, a local favorite, before catching a movie with his wife. In short, Chorida has fallen in love with Steel City. It’s also where he’s helped create more than 300 jobs through Thar Process, the company he built in his adopted home.

“I’ve seen the city grow, and I’ve grown with it,” Chordia said. “The city is bright, growing and heading in the right direction, and we’ve contributed in a small way to that.”

In the U.S., Chordia has been able to live his dream of being both a scientist and a businessman.

When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing
by Daniel H. Pink

Everyone knows that timing is everything. But we don't know much about timing itself. Our lives are a never-ending stream of "when" decisions: when to start a business, schedule a class, get serious about a person. Yet we make those decisions based on intuition and guesswork.

Timing, it's often assumed, is an art. In When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing , Pink shows that timing is really a science. Drawing on a rich trove of research from psychology, biology, and economics, Pink reveals how best to live, work, and succeed.

Today in History

- February 16, 1878 -

The Bland-Allison Act was passed, which made the coinage of silver dollars legal again in the United States. Minting silver currency had become a huge political and economic issue at the time, since the U.S. economy was backed by actual gold and silver deposits. Congress caused a financial panic in 1873 when it decided to end the bimetallic standard (minting both gold and silver coins) and ceased purchasing silver. Missouri Congressman Richard Bland advocated for a return to silver coinage and was backed by western mining interests, leading to the successful passage of this act. However, silver and gold would remain a hot-button issue well into the 1900s. For more information, please see this article .
