We Have a Title for our
New Documentary Series!
We listened! A number of folks told us they were troubled by our working title, American Birthright, so we looked for a new one.
With your help, we chose: The Raising of America: Early Childhood and the Future of Our Nation.
Many thanks to Amy Acton, Professor, College of Public Health, Ohio State University, for submitting the winning idea in our Title Contest!

Production Highlights
We've been running around the country all summer and early fall filming The Raising of America and are quite pleased with the results so far.
We joined play groups in Los Angeles, Boston and Minnesota, interviewed community organizers, child care workers and, of course, filmed parents, babies and toddlers across the nation.
Our interviewees include Nobel Laureate, James Heckman, former Senator and Vice President Walter Mondale, and his nemesis in the Nixon White House, Pat Buchanan, who penned President Nixon's veto of the Comprehensive Child Development Act (Mondale-Brademas) of 1971. We visited child development centers at Camp Pendleton Marine Base, the military being one place where government provides affordable - and universal - quality early care, some modeled on Italy's Reggio Emilia approach. We filmed in the labs of neuroscientists conducting experiments on the effects of stress on rat mothers and their pups. We'll continue to chart our production progress through this eNewsletter and on our Raising of America Facebook page. |

Towards a New Biology of Social Adversity
PNAS just released a collection of papers that addresses the developmental and biological consequences of early childhood adversity. The papers come from a variety of disciplinary perspectives and authors include Nancy Adler, Clyde Hertzman, Bruce McEwen, and Jack Shonkoff. Read the entire collection.
The Joint Center's Health Policy Institute recently released a series of health equity reports. View this video from the September PLACE MATTERS Conference in which Dr. Brian Smedley presents the report findings. Obesity Linked to Economic Insecurity
An Oxford University study suggests that the U.S. and other countries with 'free market' regimes and less social supports have higher rates of obesity due to the stress of economic insecurity. Read more.
