New Driver's License Requirement
Be Prepared to Show Us Your ID
In the ongoing effort to combat widespread identity theft and the fraudulent filing of tax returns, many states will now require taxpayers to provide a new piece of personal identification:
  • the name on your driver’s license or state ID
  • the issuing state
  • the driver’s license number (DLN) or state ID number
  • date of issue
  • expiration date
Therefore, it may be easier to provide your tax preparer with a copy of all taxpayers' identification cards or driver's licenses.

Taxpayers who do not have or wish to provide a driver’s license or state ID card may have to paper file their returns.  Their returns may be delayed due to additional efforts to prevent identity fraud.

Keep in mind that several states, such as IL and SC will not be issuing refunds until after March 1st.

The IRS will be holding refunds on returns with the Earned Income Tax Credit and Additional Child Tax Credit until February 15th and then begin issuing them.
