Our new exhibit, which opens on Thursday, will feature Falling from Grace..., the work of photographer Lydia Panas. The exhibit will run from April 3 to May 31. We're excited that Lydia will be in San Francisco for a reception on Thursday, May 1, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm and hope you'll be able to join us then to welcome her to San Francisco.

Talking about her psychological portraits Lydia says, "I am interested in the facades people present to hide things about themselves. I look for the smallest details to understand what might lie underneath.

In her Falling from Grace ... series, she continues, "I constructed a system where food becomes a barrier, symbolic of the obstacles we create to disguise our intimate feelings. It is not the models' faces that suggest the emotion, but the way the food is presented.

"I found myself clicking the shutter when the model had a kind of neutral expression, which makes the encounter with the audience unclear," Lydia says.

Describing how she reacts to Lydia's work, Aline Smithson, editor of the Lenscratch photo blog says "I see the space between contemplation and animation, the space that we are in when no one is looking."

Lydia is an award-winning fine art photographer whose work has been exhibited widely throughout the United States and internationally. Her work was recently on view in the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize Exhibition 2013 at the National Gallery in London. Lydia was one of nine artists selected by Houston FotoFest curators for the prestigious International Discoveries Exhibition in 2007, and won First Prize for the Publisher's Choice Singular Image at CENTER, Santa Fe, NM.

Lydia's photographs are included in numerous collections, including the Brooklyn Museum; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego; and Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago. She has received a Whitney Museum Independent Study Fellowship. Her first monograph, The Mark of Abel, was released in the United States in March 2012, and was named one of PDN's Books of 2012 as well as a Best Coffee Table Book by the Daily Beast.

We hope you'll visit the gallery this month to see these wonderful portraits and then come again for the reception on May 1 to meet Lydia.
