The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) at Iowa State University;s College of Veterinary Medicine is a national leader in protecting animal and human health. Established in 1947, the VDL is the state's only full-service facility and is fully accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians.

The 40 year-old facility, originally built for 31 faculty and staff, now houses more than 140 faculty and technical staff.  Current programs are severely overcrowded with minimal room to  adapt to new technologies which  limits the lab's ability to stay ahead of emerging diseases and puts Iowa State at a disadvantage when attracting or retaining top student and faculty talent. As a result, Iowa State's number one legislative capital project request this year is to build an updated standalone facility to keep pace with biosecurity and service needs .

The VDL is an integral component of Iowa's animal agriculture infrastructure. As one of the 12 core labs for the National Animal Health Laboratory Network and the only one in the Midwest, the VDL is a vital resource in response to emerging diseases such as last year's outbreak of Avian Influenza with nearly 32 million birds affected and a $1.2 billion economic hit to the state. The VDL was at the forefront during the outbreak which required the lab to run multiple shifts seven days per week to assure timely testing. The timely, comprehensive, and high-quality diagnosis of diseases is critical to serving the state's $17 billion animal agriculture industry, and ensuring the world's food supply is plentiful and safe.

Upon construction of the new VDL, 50,000 square feet will be vacated in the Vet Med building which will allow the college to reallocate the vacated space to address the critical shortage of space for academic programs and scholarly research.

Did you know? Iowa State's College of Veterinary Medicine is the first public veterinary school in the country and is one of only 28 U.S. veterinary colleges. Of Iowa's practicing licensed veterinarians, 81% are graduates of Iowa State University.
