Community News  Imperial Irrigation District Launches Copper Theft Deterrent CampaignIt's just a piece of metal to some, but when thieves see copper, they see an opportunity to make some quick cash. Law enforcement officials attribute the increase in copper theft to a down economy and rising prices for scrap metals. With the price of copper hitting all time highs, its ability to tempt thieves has escalated. Imperial Irrigation District (IID) is offering up to $2,500 in reward money for information leading to the arrest and conviction of individuals stealing IID property. IID continues to have major ongoing theft of copper wire from substations, electrical boxes and power poles. Copper and metal theft costs IID hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. In addition, these crimes weaken the reliability and stability of the electric system and are dangerous for thieves, employees and ratepayers. If you witness an act of copper theft, or see suspicious activity in progress, call 911 immediately.
