New HIM Awareness Coordinator Volunteer Opportunity
The HIM Awareness Advocacy Campaign is in progress and sponsored by the AHIMA Council for Excellence in Education (CEE) workgroup. A goal of AHIMA is to have each state represented for the campaign effort with the appointment of CSA HIM Awareness Coordinator. Currently 36 out of 50 states have a CSA HIM Awareness Coordinator. The CHIA Board of Directors recently approved the appointment of a CHIA member to serve as the CSA HIM Awareness Coordinator/Liaison and decided to open this new volunteer opportunity to the CHIA membership. Background information about the HIM Awareness campaign and volunteer role: The purpose of the HIM awareness advocacy campaign is to widen and deepen the HIM footprint within the healthcare industry. The focus is advocacy for why various healthcare organizations need to hire HIM professionals and the value brought to their organization.

The role of the CSA HIM Awareness Coordinator is to participate in the HIM Awareness advocacy campaign activities and to help spread understanding throughout the industry about the work provided by HIM professionals.

Resources for this effort are provided on AHIMA Engage community which include the HIM Awareness toolkit, PowerPoint presentation, an introductory webinar, flyers. A description of what the coordinator/liaison will do can be accessed here. Length of service for this volunteer role is to be confirmed, but assumed to be for at least one year.

CHIA Blog Series: Information Governance At-a-Glance
Blog series describes the "scalable framework" AHIMA has developed, called the Information Governance Adoption Model (IGAM), as described in AHIMA's Information Governance Toolkit 2.0. This model consists of ten organizational competencies which assist HIM professionals in focusing in on all areas of IG within an organization to implement an IG program.  Read the full CHIA blog series.

Competency: Enterprise Information Management

A sub-domain of Information Governance, Enterprise Information Management (EIM) includes the polices and processes for managing all information (including taxonomies and metadata/ master data management) throughout each phase of the life cycle. In her book, Implementing Health Information Governance, Linda Kloss, MA, RHIA, FAHIMA, describes the building blocks for enterprise information management. "EIM are the managerial functions focused on life-cycle management of information assets across the enterprise. An organization won't be successful with information governance without a correspondingly strong EIM capacity. The converse is also true: EIM is unlikely to fully succeed without effective governance" (Kloss, 2015). It is important to ensure that an inventory of all of the organization's information assets has been completed to build the framework necessary to develop the policies and procedures implementing and enforcing the governance structure of enterprise information management.
