December 2017
Just in time for the holidays!  Our NEW Optimizing the Grid: A Regulator's Guide to Hosting Capacity Analyses for Distributed Energy Resources  report gives states a guide to proactively plan for and build a modern electric grid with increased distributed energy resources, like solar, energy storage and electric vehicles. A detailed guide for state utility regulators, it shares insights on hosting capacity analysis, an important new grid modernization tool to integrate more distributed energy resources without compromising the reliability, quality and safety of the electricity system. (Full story below).
By Larry Sherwood, IREC President/CEO
December is a month we tend to look back over the year. As I do that, I see an incredibly successful, productive year as it relates to IREC’s goals and objectives. This is of course against the backdrop of an equally incredible year of frustration with what’s happening on the federal level.

We know better than ever that it is  state  policy and regulatory actions that are directly determining the volume and pace of clean energy access and adoption by consumers across the U.S. This makes IREC’s impactful state-by-state work more critical than ever before. Clearly, our work must continue in order to make it possible for more Americans to enjoy the benefits of clean renewable energy, despite any shift in federal policies.   More
Our newest regulatory tool, Optimizing the Grid: A Regulator’s Guide to Hosting Capacity Analyses for Distributed Energy Resources, will assist state regulators in guiding and overseeing utilities as they conduct hosting capacity analyses on their distribution circuits, as part of broader grid modernization or distribution planning efforts and/or in support of their state’s near- and long-term energy policy goals. WEBINAR   To learn more about hosting capacity analysis and our new resource  Optimizing the Grid: A Regulator's Guide to Hosting Capacity Analyses for Distributed Energy Resources , join report authors Sky Stanfield, Stephanie Safdi and Sara Baldwin Auck for a  FREE WEBINAR on January 10, 2018 at 1:30-3pm EDT.  They will share insights on the findings and recommendations in the guide and how it can help states learn the 'what, why and how' about hosting capacity analysis, including lessons learned from other states.  REGISTER
This year, not only will top engineering students interact with utility professionals and present their research at DistribuTECH 2018 , they'll also be leading a panel session on the power systems industry they may work for one day soon.  Students will hear first-hand from new power systems engineers working in the industry as they share their experiences making the transition from academia to the workplace. We'll save you a seat!

For the first time, a special section for students on the DTECH website was created by conference organizers to help students feel part of the conference and to introduce conference attendees to GEARED students who will have a strong presence at DTECH. Nearly 50 posters showing students' research on power systems, smart grid and distributed technology topics will be on display at booth 1665 throughout the conference. More
Released last month, IREC's Community Solar Basics guide provides critical program design elements and key considerations for policymakers and stakeholders as they develop effective community solar programs. Developed as part of the Solar Market Pathways program (SMP) - an effort funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Office - this guide also identifies additional resources that provide insights and guidance on community solar program design. IREC serves in a national technical/advisory role for SMP. Look for IREC at These Upcoming Events
GEARED (Grid Engineering for Accelerated Renewable Energy Deployment) students will display their research in a poster exhibit, booth 1665, for the 2-day conference. Come by and say hello!

At TechAdvantage, GEARED students get the chance to learn more about rural electric utility cooperatives in a personal, one-on-one experience!
