NEW LIFE MONTH
Celebrating the New Life phase of Meher Baba's work via a series of weekly programs at Meherabode
Avatar Meher Baba's "New Life" was a period of renunciation, wandering, mendicancy, and spiritual work undertaken by Baba on October 16, 1949, continuing for more than two years till March 1952, when Baba entered a "Free Life" phase of work, ending in the "Manonash" [annihilation of the mind] phase. For the New Life, Baba selected twenty companions to join him in his self-described life of complete reliance on God, telling his companions, "Life during that period will be lived at the mercy of the world. It will be a life of complete helplessness and hopelessness." Baba and his companions traveled (mostly by foot) through several parts of India, living (in the first period) only on food acquired by begging, or (in a later period) through menial work performed. During some periods, Baba and his New Life Companions were accompanied by a whole menagerie of animals, who traveled with them from place to place. |

This New Life is endless, and, even after my physical death, will be kept alive by those who live the life of complete renunciation of falsehood, lies, hatred, anger, greed and lust; and who, to accomplish all this, do no lustful actions, do no harm to anyone, do no backbiting, do not seek material possession or power, who accept no homage, neither covet honor nor shun disgrace, and fear no one and nothing. By those who rely wholly and solely on God, and who love God purely for the sake of loving, who believe in the lovers of God and in the reality of Manifestation, and yet do not let go the hand of truth, and who, without being upset by calamities, bravely and wholehertedly face all hardships and with 100% cheerfulness, and give no importance to caste, creed and religious ceremonies. This New Life will live by itself eternally, even if there is no one to live it. Meher Baba, New Life Declaration
(given at Mahabaleshwar in September of 1949)

A program of readings from various accounts, exploring the vivid experience of Meher Baba's New Life Companions.
"Mad rush and hurry as ever. Drs. Nath and Khare and others were standing at a distance. our long procession started, first the white horse (led by Dr. Donkin),followed by the camel cart, (driven by Baidul), bullock cart (driven by Vishnu), a white cow, two calves (one of them quite small and often carried by Dr. Nilu around his shoulders), the caravan drawn by bullocks (driven by Pendu), two obstinate donkeys, and then came some of the men companions who were followed some distance away by Baba and Eruch (all of them in white kafni and green turban) and again some distance away we four women in blue cotton saris (which we only wore for that first day)...
We must have made a beautiful picture..."
-- Excerpt from Mani S. Irani's journal: December 1949 (two months after initial departure October 16, 1949)

I have come to remind all people that they should live on Earth as the children of one Father until my grace awakens them to the realization that they are all one without a second, and that all divisions and conflict and hatred are but a shadow-play of their own ignorance.
