DOORWAYS' Highest Honor
Carole Hunt
Carole Hunt

Since 1993, the Michael Edlin Award has been presented to an individual or group dedicated to the overriding mission of DOORWAYS: Compassionate care for people affected by HIV/AIDS.

Michael Edlin was a founding board member of DOORWAYS, using his talents and considerable power of
persuasion to bring people together and organize board committees. He pressured friends to do PR and opened his own home for the first DOORWAYS dinner. As a person living with HIV, Michael forfeited his privacy and used his own life as a tool to fight discrimination against others living with the disease. Eventually, he closed his business to dedicate more time to fundraising and, at the time of his death, left a legacy of hope that lives on at DOORWAYS and is embodied in what this award represents - the ability of this organization to offer its clients and residence, access to HOUSING, renewed HEALTH, and the HOPE needed to seek a better life for themselves and their families.

The Michael Edlin Award, DOORWAYS' highest honor, will be presented to Carole Hunt at the Annual Dinner on Tuesday, April 3.

Whole Foods selected DOORWAYS to receive donations of Alaffia Good Soap during their recent promotion. For every bar of Good Soap donated by customers, Whole Foods matched bar for bar. The campaign smashed all expectations! Jessica Seratti, Senior Marketing Specialist at Whole Foods, delivered 785 bars of Good Soap to DOORWAYS! President and CEO Opal M. Jones along with Director of Development Jim Timmerberg accepted the boxes on behalf of the many residents who will get to enjoy the generous donation.
FridayNightSocialCalling all Chefs, Bakers, and Cooks

For nearly 20 years, our community has hosted a monthly social event for people affected by HIV/AIDS. This event allows individuals to forget about their stressors for a couple of hours, have fun, and enjoy visiting with those with whom they have something in common. This event normally draws between 40-50 individuals-most of whom are low-income and/or homeless.

Unfortunately, those behind the event have had to take a step back, leaving the future of the social in doubt. In hope of trying to keep this tradition alive, DOORWAYS is looking for possible chefs, bakers, and/or donors that could provide enough food for 40-50 people for the once a month event. Donors can give one-time or help with the event on a regular basis.

If you or anyone you know could be of service, please contact Patrick Young at [email protected] or (314) 328-2707.
