Rector's Reflections

Living In the Now and the Not Yet

In this season of Advent we stand in the discomforting quiet of waiting for the salvation of the Lord while simultaneously seeing that very salvation breaking into the world around us. Like John the Baptist we ask Jesus "are you here, or should we still wait?" The answer to this question is "yes." Yes, Jesus is here among us in his body and blood at the eucharist. But we wait for the day when he returns. Yes, Jesus is here among us bringing peace and reconciliation. But we wait for the day when he will make all things new. The new life promised by the coming of a savior is both realized and still to come. We who live in the Christian faith do so as people searching the world around us for signs of God's kingdom. Gathering as Christ's body on earth, we have a sort of duel-citizenship in the now and the not-yet as we both proclaim that Christ is among us and also fervently pray "even so, come Lord Jesus." As believers, our hope does not rest in the efforts of our piety or in the comfort of the hereafter. Rather, our hope is in the promises of a gracious, faithful God; promises fulfilled before our eyes and those not yet seen. We long for the day in which, like Isaiah's vision of what will be, the blind see and the lame leap like deer. Yet we tell what we see and hear around us: that the dead are raised and the poor receive good news. The day is here and yet still we wait. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. [Sundays and Seasons, 2016]

Our sequence hymn this week is Of the Father's Love Begotten. In it we sing of Jesus present at the worlds began to be and the source, the ending of the things that are, that have been, and that future years shall see. Thee hymn summarizes the One for whom we wait, the One present in the now and the not yet-Jesus, Emanuel, God with us evermore and evermore! Come wait and watch for salvation this Sunday.

Advent Blessings,
Bill+

Hanging of the Greens

We gather on Monday, December 19th at 5:00-7:00 pm for a new event: The Hanging of the Greens to prepare our worship space for the Nativity of Our Lord. We will decorate our two Chrismon* Trees, hang swags and garland. Please bring Christmas cookies or an appetizer snack to share. All are invited and welcome to assist the Flower Guild and staff, hope to see you there!

*A Chrismon tree is an evergreen tree often found in the chancel or nave of a church during Advent and Christmastide.  The Chrismon tree symbolizes the eternal life Jesus Christ provides and is decorated with white lights and white and gold "Chrismons" ancient symbols for Christ or some part of Christ's ministry from star to cross.

  Gail and Don Holm

This week, as part of the random selection of church leaders, the camera found Gail and Don Holm.  Gail is the co-chair of Episcopal Church Women, and Don has a huge leadership role in our church as our terrific Senior Warden.  Don is an active member of the bible study for men. Both are involved with our food pantry. Gail is a member of the Altar Guild, and Don is a community leader with Families In Transition, (F.I.T.). In the photo below, Gail prepared both the ham and beans for the recently successful ECW church dinner.

Nominating Committee for 2017 Annual Meeting
Dianne Wasmuth and Jack McLaughlin, as co-chairs of the Nominating Committee, are seeking volunteers to serve on this committee. If you would be interested in this short term commitment, please contact Dianne (569-3526) or Jack (569-6270).

The committee will be soliciting interest in filling three (3) positions on the Vestry and one (1) position as alternate delegate to the Lakes Region Convocation and Diocesan Convention. If you are interested in serving in these positions, we ask that you submit a Leadership Interest Application form which can be found in the following places: Parish Office; the bulletin board in the Parish Hall; and the table in the Narthex.

Thank you in advance for your interest.
Blessings,
Dianne and Jack

 Linda and Clint Brown

All Saints welcomes Clint and Linda Brown.  After retiring, Clint and Linda moved to Wolfeboro on Oct. 12th from Lake Charles, Louisiana.  As a youth, Clint spent summers in Wolfeboro. This was a natural move for them to our beautiful town, as it  brought them much closer to their daughter who lives in Brentwood, NH.   Clint and Linda, we are grateful that you are worshipping with us.
Connie Mitchell

We welcome Connie Mitchell who downsized and moved this summer from her farm in Barnstead to a smaller home  in Wolfeboro. Connie regularly attends women's worship.    We are happy that you've chosen All Saints, and we look forward to sharing worship with you.  Welcome.

Carla Bickford

It is an honor to have the camera lens focus on Carla Bickford. Carla and her late husband, Al, were long time members of All Saints before moving a few years ago.  Several months ago, Carla moved back to our area and renewed her commitment to All Saints.  Carla and Al provided the food and refreshments at our 10 AM coffee hour every Sunday for over a decade. For years, they were the cooks for the summer fair, and they also cooked for youth groups.
I t is heartwarming to again see Carla's smiling face, and having her worship with us again.  Welcome home, Carla.

Office Angels

Deb Hoyt, our Parish Administrator, hosted a thank-you party for the Office Angels on Wed., Dec. 7th.  The Office Angels assist in preparation of Parish Bulletins, do clerical work, and fill in for Deb as needed.
Office Angels in the photo below, are Bob Champaign, Rev. Petersen, Deb Hoyt, Sandi and Don Johnson, Arlene Salzgeber, & Dianne Wasmuth.  Deb is looking for more angels.  Please see her for details.

Kids4Peace
At coffee hours this Sunday, please welcome young participants from Kids4Peace, the international program that brings Jewish, Muslim, and Christian middle schoolers to the U.S. in a relationship that begins with summer camp (in New Hampshire at the Barbara Harris Camp and Conference Center) and continues with mentoring relationships and education over several years, making these young people ambassadors for peace in a troubled part of the world, the birthplace of Jesus. The Mission Outreach Team has recommended we dedicate our Christmas Eve offering to this non-profit whose director is the Rev. Josh Thomas, who graduated from Dartmouth and served as campus and young adult missioner in the New Hampshire diocese before joining Kids4Peace.
