NCPC Launches Federal Urban
Design Initiative

NCPC is developing a new federal urban design element for the Comprehensive Plan. As part of this effort, we're asking the public to weigh in. Which design values do you think should inform the physical character of federal developments in the nation's capital? Are there federal buildings, campuses or public spaces in the nation's capital that you like or dislike?

New Museum Steps Forward

At the November meeting, the Commission approved preliminary site and building plans, and final site utility plans for the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The newest Smithsonian project, which is slated for a prime location on the National Mall, received commendations for reducing the overall building size, changes to the signature porch, refinement of a water feature, and the removal of a skylight. The design is expected to be back before NCPC for final site and building plans late next summer.

Dupont Circle Park Books a Makeover

A long-anticipated plan to restore a heavily-trafficked triangle park just north of Dupont Circle was unanimously approved by the Commission. Preliminary and final development plans will rehabilitate the NPS triangle park bounded by Connecticut Avenue, 20th and Q Streets, NW. In addition to the replacement of flagstone paving, additional improvements will include new trees, curbs, soil, and grass. Responding to discussions and public input on how people move around and through the site, an existing bus stop is being moved across the street and a 30 inch fence was removed from the plans.

Agencies Share Ideas
at Flood Forum

On October 31, federal and District agencies joined forces at the National Archives to share information on flooding issues that vex the Federal Triangle. NCPC is leading multi-agency efforts towards solving stormwater issues revealed by a 2006 flood which caused extensive damage in downtown Washington. The workshop provided presentations from FEMA on location considerations, and the US Army Corps of Engineers on flood-proofing practices. There was also a tour of the National Archives' flood-stopping methods, as well as presentations on mitigation efforts currently used by the U.S. Department of Commerce, the National Gallery of Art, and the National Museum of Natural History.
