What difference does Population make in soybeans?
CTCT-20180531_164121
This week I want to talk about planting population, as I have heard a lot of chatter about this and I believe it could be a huge learning experience for everyone. Conversations I have had with growers always lead into asking how their crop is doing and what population they drop on corn and soybeans. Some guys tell me they dropped 170k on soybeans, some guys say they dropped 110k on soybeans and maybe a couple aren't sure... Looking back at the Becks PFR book, they say the 110k range is the most profitable and in 2016 it was the highest yielding even vs 185k. The 6 year multi-location economic optimum seeding rate is 100k. showing $30/acre net return over 175k. So the question, what population do you plant and why? I am curious how the poll shakes out. The next question should be, what percentage of your planter soybeans or corn actually emerged? Have you done stand counts? If you are getting hurt on emergence, you saw in last weeks email how important closing wheels are to emergence. Hopefully this all gives you something to think about, hopefully everyone is testing different populations on their farm to see which rate wins!
