Deschutes Public Library "In the Know" Newsletter
August 17, 2016
We Recommend ... History!
Napoleon Bonaparte said, "History is the version of past events that people have decided to agree upon." If there's one thing we agree on, it's that we love history here at Deschutes Public Library---whether it's an in-depth exploration of a period in time, or a swash-buckling historical novel. Check out our staff recommendations here. You'll find fiction and non-fiction, books and DVDs, and tales that take you all over the world, as well as back in time.
Volunteer to Read, Rhyme and Romp
Do you love reading to children? We're looking to add to our corps of trained volunteers who visit preschools weekly to provide early literacy-based story times. If you are interested in being a Read, Rhyme and Romp volunteer in Bend or Redmond from October 2016 through May 2017, let us know! You'll need to attend two mandatory trainings (9/23 & 9/30). Volunteers are then assigned a preschool, and the library provides books & props. For info, email [email protected] or [email protected].
Starting School Story Times
Starting kindergarten can be an exciting and scary time for children. Help a child you love ease into this new stage of life with Starting School Story Times at the library. This special story time is just for children entering kindergarten. They'll be entertained with stories about starting school, as well as silly songs, rhymes and a craft.

Let's Look at the Sun---Safely!
See the sun through the filtered telescopes of our friends from the Observatory at Sunriver. You'll get an unbelievable, and safe view, of the Sun. Our star ---a fireball of hot gases---has far more features than you might think. Look for sunspots as big as Earth in the Observatory's white light-filtered telescope. These viewing sessions are free and open to all:
Author! Author! Tickets on Sale August 25
Tickets for the fifth season of Author! Author! will be available on August 25 on the Deschutes Public Library Foundation's website. Season tickets are just $80 per person for all four award-winning authors, and all money raised from tickets sales helps the Foundation support library programs and services not funded through tax dollars. Individual tickets will go on sale, as available, after the season ticket sale window closes, so be sure to grab the season to ensure your seat!
