Bishop Barres Authorizes Special Collection to Aid those Affected by Hurricane Harvey

  ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. - August 28, 2017

The Most Reverend John O. Barres, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre, today asked for prayers and a special collection be taken in the parishes of the Diocese of Rockville Centre during the weekend of September 2-3, 2017 or September 16-17, 2017, to assist those in the Gulf Coast region suffering from the after affects of Hurricane Harvey.

"We join in prayer and solidarity with all those who have been and continue to be impacted by Hurricane Harvey," said Bishop Barres. We pray for the victims and their families during this tragic time. We also pray for the heroic first responders and rescue personnel, some now coming from our own diocese to aid and assist, that our mother Mary wraps them in her mantle and protects them as they save others. We also ask the parishioners of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, still feeling the effects of Superstorm Sandy, if they are able, to help our brothers and sisters in Christ down south."

To contribute to the Diocese of Rockville Centre's Hurricane Harvey Fund, parishioners are asked to contact their local parish or they can send a donation to the Finance Office, Diocese of Rockville Centre, P.O. Box 9023, Rockville Centre, NY 11571-9023. Checks should be made out to the Diocese of Rockville Centre. "Hurricane Harvey" should be marked on the memo section of the check. For more information call 516-678-5800, ext. 221.

" The annual World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation offers to individual believers and to the community a precious opportunity to renew our personal participation in this vocation as custodians of creation, raising to God our thanks for the marvelous works that He has entrusted to our care, invoking his help for the protection of creation and his mercy for the sins committed against the world in which we live." - Pope Francis
NEW USCCB RESPECT LIFE PROGRAM  2017-18
A brief reflection exploring God's assurance of being with us in times of trial and encourages us to extend his love to others who suffer.

When battered by life's storms, or immersed in a dense fog of suffering and uncertainty, we may feel alone and unequipped to handle the circumstances. Yet with words that echo through thousands of years into the corners of our hearts, the Lord says to us, "Do not fear: I am with you" (Isaiah 41:10). Read More

9 Days for Life

The ideal setting for this "One Night of Prayer, Penance, and Pilgrimage" would be a youth or young adult program on or around the weekend of January 20 or 27, 2018.

The goal of the program is to introduce young people to the 9 Days for Life novena. A short guide that suggests ideas for youth or young adult ministries seeking to incorporate the novena into their parish
programming in January 2018.  More information

Spiritual Adoption Program

The Purpose of the Spiritual Adoption Program is threefold:
  • Encourage parishes, schools and other communities to pray for babies in danger of abortion.
  • Educate adults and children about the development of the pre-born child.
  • Provide mothers in need with assistance at a 'baby shower' of donated baby gifts, or simply celebrate with a 'birthday party' at the conclusion of the program. In some schools a crib was bought with monetary gifts and the children filled a crib with gifts for expectant Mothers.
This is done by encouraging people to "spiritually adopt" an unborn baby, and to follow their baby along the path to being born.   Read More
