Food for Thought, Literally

It's no secret that the foods you eat have a direct and powerful impact on your physical health and appearance. Unfortunately there is far less awareness that foods affect how we think and feel as well.

Medical and mental health researchers and practitioners are finding increasing evidence that certain nutrients are especially impactful on psychological and emotional well-being. This list can make it easy for you to naturally promote mental health.  Most items on this list are associated with reducing depression and anxiety in clinical studies.

  • Omega-3 fatty acids; Best sources - salmon, oysters, sardines, walnut, chia and flax seeds
  • Complete proteins; Best sources - eggs, poultry
  • Folate; Best sources - lentils, chickpeas, spinach
  • Vitamin D; Best sources - mushrooms, salmon, tuna
  • Zinc; Best source - pumpkin seeds
  • Iron; Best sources - red meat, nuts, beans, and dark leafy greens
  • Probiotics; Best sources - kefir, kimchi, certain pickled vegetables, yogurt with live cultures
Also, if you have a spiritual practice such as yoga, mindfulness, or breathing techniques, your foods can really impact your progress. Heavy meals can make meditation difficult, as well as making you sleepy during your practice.  And while onion and garlic have general health benefits, yogis from India recommend them only in moderation if trying to perform spiritual practices - they send energy to lower chakras at the expense of the higher chakras.   Prior to your spiritual practice, choose light portions of whole foods that are less difficult to digest.

 Probiotics & The Gut-Brain Connection

Use of probiotics is being proven to benefit mood in recent scientific literature.

How on earth can a probiotic, designed to benefit your digestion, actually help with anxiety and depression?  It turns out that probiotics are also delivery vehicles for neuroactive compounds.  These compounds can stimulate the nervous system resulting in emotional improvements.

In one study, individuals who took a combination of the probiotics Lactobacillus Helveticus and Bifidobacterium Longum for 30 days experienced reduced psychological distress and decreased cortisol levels when compared to those who took a placebo.

Another study found that consuming a healthy probiotic yogurt also improved mood.  Individuals who were healthy, but had low mood scores, were chosen for the study.  After the three weeks of consuming healthy probiotic yogurt, these individuals reported and improvement in mood and reduction in depression.

And in a study of patients with chronic fatigue syndrome, those taking Lactobacillus Casei three times daily for two months experienced an improvement in anxiety when compared to those taking a placebo.

At Holistic Health & Fitness, we carry the Advanced Naturals line of probiotics.  We carry various strains of probiotics, in differing strengths depending on our clients' needs.  Most are refrigerated from their creation, through their shipment to us, and at our clinic.  This results in the most live cultures being provided to you and your digestive system.

Call us at 314-647-3999 to find out which probiotic is right for you!

EAT YOUR WATER & LIKE IT...A LOT!

Summer is in full swing! Despite the rains, many of us are still out there playing our hearts out. Outdoor summer fun is all about working up a sweat and playing till we're dog tired. This means sunkissed bodies, such vibrant awakeness and utterly satisfying exhaustions at the end of a day.

Even if we're stuck indoors working most of the week, the summer sun beckons us out into its spaces and rewards us with a brilliant array of colors. Flowers are in bloom, foods are bursting with flavor and variety, summer is a feast at every level.

Staying hydrated is an essential part of our summer living. It helps keep our body operating at its best and helps keeps our mind sharp and clear. We can do this through drinking water consistently throughout the day. Yet, some don't find water all that exciting...so, we can also eat our hydration! Combined with a daily intake of water, our summer health strategy can include vibrant, hydrating foods. Intentionally integrating these hydration snacks and meals into our summer days is a great way to keep ourselves happy, clear and ready to play.

Try some of these delicious, seasonal hydrating foods, each has a high water content, along with great minerals, vitamins:  Apples, bell peppers, berries, broccoli, cantaloupe, carrots, cauliflower (branch out and try the purple, gold and green varieties!), celery, cherries, kohlrabi, melons, peaches, plums, spinach, tomatoes, watermelons, or kohlrabi.  (Kohlrabi is a stout plant from the cabbage family, which can be eaten raw as well as cooked.)

Here are some quick and simple edible hydration recipes for your summer fun!

Spinach Salad with Blueberry, Pecans & Basil Vinaigrette

Late Cancellation Fees:
We Don't Like Charging Them....
...........and Clients Sure Don't Like Paying Them!

Please Give 24 Hours Notice when Cancelling Appointments

Summer often results in an uptick in late cancellations and no-shows.  Please consider the following regarding appointments.

Your Therapists Time:   They've set aside time to care for you, and will have an unused hour if you don't keep your appointment---please respect their commitment to your health.

Other Clients' Health:  If you have a session reserved and don't use it, others were not able to be seen - most time slots have multiple requests from several clients.

Emergencies:  Let us know immediately of any changes, and we'll try to fill the slot without charging you.  We would rather fill the slot than charge you!

Voicemail:  Always leave a message the minute you are aware of a change--we check messages offsite, and may be able to fill your slot without charging you.

Online Changes:  Before midnight the day prior to your session, the online appointment system will allow you to cancel online.  Doing so often allows others to see the open slot and fill it.  In this case, please also give us a call after cancelling the appointment.

Wait Lists:  If you have a frequently-changing work or child-care schedule, ask to be added to a wait-list instead of booking an appointment.  You will be called the day of your request, when your schedule is more predictable.

Please help us out by honoring your appointments
and our 24 hour cancellation policy.

Reflexology---It Does a Body Good

Reflexology is an ancient method of natural healing based on the concept that every part of the body correlates with specific points on the feet. By applying precise and steady pressure to these reflex areas, the reflexologist urges the body towards wellness, strengthening the body's remarkable ability to heal itself.

Primary Benefits of Reflexology:
· Relieves stress and tension
· Improves sleep and relaxation
· Revitalizes energy
· Improves Sinus Function
· Promotes a sense of well-being
· Clears congested energy pathways
· Helps with foot and calf pain

What Will the Therapist Treat?
The foot has points which correspond to various internal organs and areas of the muscles and bones.  The therapist will check tender points, which may indicate an issue in a specific area.  This diagram shows the many correspondences of the foot with the rest of our bodies.

What's A Session Like?
· The therapist will discuss your health and goals
· You will receive a warming herbal foot soak prior to treatment
· The feet and calves will be thoroughly massaged, with special attention paid to tender spots and areas that need attention

Find Emotional Peace by Inquiring into Your Stressful Thoughts
The Work of Byron Katie

Best-Selling Author's Technique has Helped Thousands Build Harmonious Relationships

Next Class:  Tuesday, July 21st at 7 pm

Many of us have "hidden beliefs" that interfere with us being present and happy in relationships.  Examples include:  "Husbands should......", "Parents should......", "My Boss Should....".  The Work is a technique which helps us find out how some of our hidden beliefs create unrealistic expectations that can reduce our happiness and satisfaction.

Another wonderful aspect of The Work is the turnaround.  Participants look at their stressful thoughts, opinions, and grudges in this process.  Then, the thought is turned around, and participants find where the opposite of this belief may be just as true, or even more true.  The process is often freeing and results in greater peace.

The class is taught by Bryan Wagner, who is Certified in the Work of Byron Katie.  Students love his calm presence and passion for helping people find peace through this technique.

Time:  7pm - 9pm
