New trends for kitchens & baths

Creative Kitchen & Bath  is back from Orlando where we saw the latest developments and soon-to-be-available products in residential kitchen and bath during the annual Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS)

Not a new trend, but certainly on the rise, LED-integrated mirrors are being offered by most everyone as they allow for a cleaner look in bathrooms. Wall sconces, bath light bars and ceiling fixtures aren't necessarily going away, but people are beginning to consider how impractical overhead, too-high-up or too-far-on-the-sides light placement is for grooming purposes (due to shadows cast on the face).

While "smart toilets" and bidet seats continue to be a talking point in the American bath market, another trend that popped up on our radar is toilets that practically clean themselves. You'll hear about self-cleaning toilets, but other manufacturers are focusing on reducing frequency of toilet cleaning by enhancing the ceramic bowls with special coatings to break down and repel waste and rethinking the flush jets.

Increasing concerns about the quality of drinking water - especially following the crisis in Flint, Michigan - led to the development of filtration systems for the home. Using coconut shell-activated carbon, which is eco-friendlier than traditional coal-based filters, the system reduces lead, mercury, pharmaceuticals and other contaminants that can be encountered in water, especially where there's aging infrastructure.
