The Kaplan Center's Upcoming Events & Professional Lectures

Dr. Gary Kaplan attends 3-day class in  Nutritional Approaches to Pain Management at the University of Miami School of Medicine.

Sat, May 4, 2013
Dr. Gary Kaplan Lectures on Central Sensitization Syndrome
at the University of Maryland School of Medicine's Health & Wellness Conference in Baltimore. For more information about the conference, please click here.

In his talk,"Central Sensitization
Syndrome (CSS): Pointing Us Toward a New Paradigm for Understanding and Treating Chronic Pain and Depression," Dr. Kaplan will explore how CSS has multiple, reinforcing causes that require us to think about chronic pain as an evolutionary process and not as simply the consequence of having contracted a unique disease or suffered a single traumatic event. He will also emphasize the necessity of using comprehensive and integrated treatment protocols in treating chronic pain. Click here to view Dr. Kaplan's video series on CSS.

Book Recommendation:
The Practical Neuroscience of Happiness Love & Wisdom
The full title of this month's recommendation is Buddha's Brain: the Practical Neuroscience of Happiness, Love and Wisdom.  But it's not a book about Buddha; it's a book about having a healthier brain!

The Author, Rick Hanson, a neuropsychologist and a meditation teacher, does a beautiful job explaining how the brain works on a biochemical level and how the practice of meditation can improve how we feel physically and emotionally.  Published in 2009.

Last month I highly recommended Tara Brach's recently published book, True Refuge: Finding Peace and Freedom in Your Own Awakened Heart.  It's wonderful.  Please read it.  -- Dr. Gary
