SEPTEMBER 2017
WELCOME!
Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the September issue of the College & Career Pathways Institute ( CCPI) newsletter. It's that back-to-school time of year, and, like you, we are excited to see the halls filled with students again!

This summer CCPI staff have been busy launching new professional development workshops and providing site-based consulting to clients across the country. From coast to coast, we're helping educators and program developers meet the new demands of Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), and we are testing new interventions that will support greater career development among adult and first-generation learners.  Connect with us to find out how  we can tailor our services to support your organization's goals.
In this issue, we spotlight impactful strategies and tools that CCPI professional development participants are utilizing to improve student success. Through their work with CCPI, members of New Mexico's  SUN PATH Consortium developed an online resource tool to publish their integrated education and training curricula. And CCPI's career development workshops have strengthened the practices of  NYC Department of Youth & Community Development professionals, seeing more than 150 educators in workshops.

Stay tuned this fall as we announce a new contextualized career development workshop series designed specifically for workforce, youth and adult educators implementing bridge and integrated career pathways programs.

We hope you join us for our STEM Bridge and Student Financial Wellness workshop sessions at the upcoming National College Transition Network conference in Warwick, Rhode Island, November 13-15, 2017. Find us on Facebook , Twitter , or LinkedIn to learn more about our upcoming events and to join the conversation. We look forward to connecting with you soon.

Enjoy!

PROMISING PRACTICES
Integrating Career Development in the Classroom

At CCPI, we've been thinking a lot about career development in the classroom  - and we aren't the only ones. More and more workforce, youth career training and first-year college programs have contacted us about delivering integrated career development workshops, especially with the implementation of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA).

In response, we have created several new professional development workshops that focus on career development.

PARTNERSHIP SPOTLIGHT
SUNNY OUTCOMES IN NEW MEXICO'S INTEGRATED EDUCATION & TRAINING PROGRAMS

Three years ago, New Mexico began the Skill Up Network: Pathways Acceleration in Technology and Healthcare ( SUN PATH) funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Initiative ( TAACCCT). Thanks to Santa Fe Community College, the Consortium lead, CCPI was part of every step.

As Kristen Krell, Director of the New Mexico SUN PATH Consortium put it:

"Integrated Education Training programs have expanded across the state, moving more New Mexicans through training programs and into the workforce each year. And the CCPI trainings and support have truly been a catalyst for systemic change in New Mexico."
For the past three years, CCPI has provided innovative technical assistance to the 11 SUN PATH Consortium Colleges of New Mexico as they've launched and grown their integrated basic skills training program offerings across the state. In the first year, CCPI spurred the launch of SUN PATH with introductory two-day workshops on integrated training programming and teaching models.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Bridge to College Success

Diego joined the Bridge to College & Careers Program  at LaGuardia Community College  in spring 2016. He describes the combination of emotions that many new Bridge Program students feel as "the excitement of taking the first step to getting my HSE diploma," and the "fear of not being able to do it."

Thankfully, that fear quickly disappeared once Diego began classes. "They made me realize that graduating from high school was a possibility for me," he says.

The Bridge Program also helped Diego think beyond his high school credentials, and soon he was contemplating associate and bachelor's degrees.

"They guided me through the process of applying, helping me find ways to afford college and collecting any required documents early."

One year later, Diego has finished his first semester as an Accounting major, and when asked about his greatest accomplishment in college so far, he considers it to be his 4.0 GPA. Diego's goal is to obtain a Bachelor degree in Economics and have a career that allows him to have a family and provide for them.

"I am proud of the results attained [this past] spring. All that help and effort put me where I am today."

Keep going Diego!
