Muskegon forms new partnership with GVSU

The Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce and Muskegon Area First have forged a new partnership  with the Grand Valley State University - Seidman School of Business.

Starting in 2017, Associate Dean, Dr. Paul Isely will lead his team to research and present Muskegon County's Annual Economic Forecast during the popular Muskegon Chamber January Business for Breakfast.

Following the retirement of long-time forecast presenter George Erickcek, from the W.E. UpJohn Institute for Employment Research, a new local partnership was sought.

"Paul is very familiar with West Michigan and the Muskegon Lakeshore," Chamber President Cindy Larsen said. "We are excited to work with him and welcome him and his team to Muskegon for this important discussion."

Dr. Isely is the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs in the Seidman School of Business.  He holds his Ph.D. and M.S. in Economics from Purdue University and a dual B.S. in Physics and Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

A Record Year For Tourism
Muskegon County is becoming an increasingly popular vacation hot spot as the annual percentage of hotel rooms filled is rising. This means there is also an increase in the hotel-room funds collected by the Muskegon County Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB).

So far, more than $1.2 million has been collected. This is the third consecutive year of record collections, with the tax collection increasing by $50,000 each year. The tax is the primary revenue source of the CVB and is used to hire sales staff and for marketing or special projects that promote Muskegon as an overnight destination for business, vacations, weddings, sports, group tours, reunions and more.
$700,000 Given to Area Manufacturers
Nine different Muskegon Area companies received Skilled Trades Training Fund (STTF) grants totaling over $700,000.

  • Arconic (formerly Alcoa Howmet)
  • Century Foundry
  • Dynamic Conveyor
  • Johnson Technology
  • L-3 Combat Propulsion Systems

The STTF is an annual competitive grant given by the Michigan Workforce Development Agency. It provides employer responsive training that enhances talent, productivity, and employment retention. This statewide grant program encourages economic growth by supporting business investment in its workforce by funding for short-term, customized in-demand training.
