Sisters and Brothers
On Sunday, during coffee-hour, we held an informal "check-in" with folks regarding our efforts to be more welcoming of our Latino sisters and brothers. (I encouraged folks to read the blog I had posted last Sunday on our Church App.) The overwhelming comments shared were positive. One concern raised was that our worship service might last longer because we're doing things in Spanish and in English. Our goal is not to duplicate everything in the liturgy, but rather Br. Ray and I are trying to "replace" pieces in Spanish so that our Latino sisters and brothers can feel included. This may not be the best approach, but it is one we're trying for now. We'll get the balance worked out in time - bear with us.
One thing that somewhat surprised me on Sunday was that few of us seem to be using the Church App as a way to stay connected and for information. If you haven't yet added this app to your smart phone, I hope you will do so. It provides us a quick way to reach out to folks. It offers a list of upcoming events, videos, blogs, and prayer requests. As a "family" who strives to care for one another, I would urge ALL of us to begin using the prayer feature on the app. You can post your own prayer request and respond to other's requests.
At our informal gathering I also did a bit of bragging about our Vestry. I am impressed that this group seems to be willing to live out our Mission by demonstrating gracious hospitality and welcome - not only regarding our Latino sisters and brothers, but also in regard to the college students who will be joining us this Friday for our Spaghetti and Concert. If you haven't heard, please read the article below. We'll host about 55 college folks who will be spending the night in our Parish Hall. The coordinator said that she reached out to over 100 churches in Tulsa, and we were the first to open our doors to them. I think this says something about us - and for that I am quite proud!
Blessings!

--- En Español ----
E
Bendiciones!
Padre Dewayne

St. Jerome Offers Gracious Hospitality
Students Join Us for Spaghetti Supper & Concert
Students Today, Leaders Forever
On Friday, our parish will be hosting 55 undergraduate and post-graduate students from Washington University of St. Louis. These students are returning home from participating in a Students Today, Leaders Forever project. These students have given up their Spring Break in order to complete 7 community service projects in various cities from St. Louis and San Antonio.
Here is an excerpt from their website:
We are Students Today Leaders Forever
We are an optimistic group of students who engage in servant leadership to create positive life experiences. With a mission to reveal leadership through service relationships, and action, STLF is engaging college, high school, and middle school students in service and leadership.
By offering them a place to crash, (they will literally be sleeping on the floor) we are truly helping them serve others!
Offering hospitality not only allows us to live out our own parish's mission, it might mean that we'll be able to host future service trips which, could perhaps, lead to them undertaking a service project right here in Tulsa.
Our hospitality includes not only "floor-space" but also welcoming them to partake of our Spaghetti Supper and Bobby Jo Valentine Concert as well as providing them breakfast before they depart for home.
If you are willing to help out in this hospitality opportunity, please contact Kellie Wright at

Scripture Readings for Sunday
lecturas de las escrituras
Jeremiah /Jeremías 31:31–34
But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says Adonai: I will put my law in their minds, and I will write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.
Psalm/Salmo 51:1-13
For behold, you look for truth deep within me,
and will make me understand wisdom secretly.
Hebrews/Hebreos 5:5–10
But having been made perfect, Jesus became, for all who obey, the source of eternal salvation...,
St. John/San Juan 12:20-33
Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation
Each Lent, we invite the faithful to consider taking advantage of one of the important sacraments of the Church - the Sacrament of Reconciliation (also known as Confession). It provides the opportunity to dig a bit deeper than the simple confession we offer in worship. If you've got something weighing on you, consider making an appointment with the Pastor.

A Pastoral Word About
Our Move to Welcome Latinos
While I've received words of excitement and encouragement from an overwhelming number of folks, there may be some who are wondering why we've made this move to be more bilingual and why we're working so hard to reach out to our Latino sisters and brothers. There are several reasons, but perhaps the most important one is that
Jesus commands us to welcome one another,
and embracing sisters and brothers is our main reason for being church.
A second reason is that it has come to my attention that we are 'losing" some of our Latinos because they feel they have difficulty following an all English liturgy. So in a way, we're trying to hang on to newcomers.
A third reason is that the GLBT Latino community doesn't have many options. Remember the day when there weren't many options for us?
This is a natural progression of our original mission to welcome ALL people, regardless of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, marital and economic status, etc
.
A fourth reason is that
we need to always work at expanding our welcome
and to practice habits of reconciliation. How can we do that if we're not willingly engaging in doing that because we're so busy with work, and family and our social life. If we cant do it "out there" we sure need to try to do that "right here."
A fifth reason is that the world is changing. We gringos will soon be a minority and we might as well grow into to that realization. This is the wave of the future. Let's walk forward into that future boldly, holding hands with one another rather kicking and screaming!
A sixth reason is that our own communion (the ECC) is now predominantly Latino. This is the fastest growing segment, and if we're going to continue as church, then we need to get with the program lest we die. It is not just about saving "others" it is also about saving ourselves.
Lastly,
it is simply the right thing to do.
So, what does that mean for us? What are the goals?
First, as we have already done, we'll continue to add more Spanish into our liturgy to help our Latino sisters and brothers feel included. We
DO NOT
intend to lengthen the liturgy by duplicating everything. We're merely saying a sentence or two in Spanish that we would normally speak in English.
Second, we hope to eventually move toward having a Spanish Mass - but we'll have to grow into that when we know we have the numbers to try it (and when Br. Ray and I can muddle through enough Spanish to offer it!) Will this mean a separate mission from St. Jerome? Maybe, but maybe not. We'll have to see.
Third, we have been speaking of purchasing a new hymnal for many years. One resource that we should consider is one published by GIA. They tend to offer some of the more contemporary hymns being used in many of our sisters ECC parishes. Many of those hymns have also been included in the newest Lutheran Hymnal. This GIA resource is completely bilingual. While in the short-term we can use it to copy and print music inserts, we may want to consider purchasing this hymnal in the long-run. Again, we'll see.
In the end, we want to welcome all--gay, straight, married, single, Latino, black, white, Asian, Indian, Native American and on and on--because that is who we are, and that is who God has called us to be. And in doing so, St. Jerome is living into its mission.

Lenten Soup and Study -
We're Invited at St. Matthews!
Saint Matthew Episcopal Church in Sand Springs, one of the churches with which we've shared dinner with dialogue several times, is having Soup & Study again during Lent. Soup service begins at 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday evenings followed by viewing of lessons from the video "Saving Jesus" (Living the Question series).
"We would love to have Saint Jeromites attend--and no need to bring soup unless so inclined," Fr. Clark says. "I hope to see you there!"

St. Stanislaus Signs Agreement With Diocese
We are thrilled to announce that St. Stanislaus Kosta Polish Catholic Church has signed an agreement to "walk with" our Diocese for one year during which time the parish will "act as if" it is fully part of our Communion.
St. Stan's story is well known because they dared to take on the Roman Catholic Diocese of St. Louis and won! From its inception, St. Stanislaus had been granted permission (via canon law) to own its own facility that was built by Polish immigrants. The Roman Catholic Diocese began looking to sell property so that it could pay damages caused by the misbehavior of its priests, and attempted to take ownership of this historic building. The people stood firm even though they were excommunicated. This is significant, not only to the Diocese, but in the larger Independent Catholic Movement. It is a parish known to the Old Catholic Church in Europe and the Episcopal Church - which urged them to consider joining their Diocese.
Their facility is glorious. It is approximately the size of a Cathedral and is outfitted with mosaics, marble, stained glass and precious artwork. They have erected a statue of Pope John Paul as a remembrance of his visit to this prominent church during his American tour.
St. Stanislaus is known for its annual Polish Festival. They have multiple services, one of which is still conducted in Polish. Father Marek Bozek, who was born in Poland, has served as their priest for about 12 years.
This parish has a direct connection to the Mission of Guadalupe in Chicago where Fr. Tom Pelz serves. Like Fr. Marek, Fr. Tom is from Poland. The Mission of Guadalupe is a growing Hispanic congregation and is in the process of formally requesting to become part of the Diocese. Because they are growing rapidly, Bishop Raphael visits them frequently.
