National Wear Red Day® - Friday, February 2, 2018
Support Go Red for Women by participating in National Wear Red Day® on
Friday, February 2, 2018 and
donate
to help fund research during American Heart Month.
Why Go Red? Cardiovascular disease in the U.S. kills approximately one woman every 80 seconds. The good news is that 80 percent of cardiac events may be prevented with education and lifestyle changes. Go Red for Women advocates for more research and swifter action for women's heart health. That's why this year we are asking that you wear red on National Wear Red Day® and
Donate to Go Red for Woman. By doing so, you help support educational programs to increase women's awareness and critical research to discover scientific knowledge about cardiovascular health.
Go Red for Women is a movement that starts with you. Lead by example and make the time to
"
Know Your Numbers
." It's knowledge that could save your life. Five numbers that all women should know to take control of their heart health are:
- Total Cholesterol
- HDL (good) Cholesterol
- Blood Pressure
- Blood Sugar
- Body Mass Index (BMI).
Knowing these numbers can help women and their healthcare provider determine their risk for developing cardiovascular diseases. It's time for all women to learn the most critical numbers in their life - their hearts depend on it.
We couldn't make positive changes without the support and donations by individuals like you.

7 Fun ways for a Family to Celebrate Valentine's Day
https://club31women.com/7-fun-ways-celebrate-valentines-day-family/
By Lisa Jacobson
Confession: I have not always been a fan of Valentine's Day.
As a mom, I objected to the commercialism, the sugar-high, and the obvious cheese-factor. Seemed something of a waste of time and energy, as far as I was concerned,(guess that disqualifies me from the "Fun Mom of the Year Award"?).
But now our family - including this formerly dubious mom - looks forward to our Valentine's celebration each year.
So what changed? You wonder.
And I have
my husband, Matthew, to thank for that. He began conspiring with the kids to come up with some sweet ideas on how they could bless each other...and
me
.
Not only that, but they somehow managed to avoid the sappy commercialism that I detested so much and put together a celebration that
truly communicated love
to one another.
And that's something this mom can get behind. To me, that's worth -
more than worth
- a little extra time and expense. I'm all about encouraging love around here!
So in case you too have had your doubts....or have wanted to do something, but are looking for some creative ideas?
Exchange Valentine's cards as a family.
You can make your own with construction paper, scissors, and crayons or coloring pencils.
OR, if you're a non-crafty mom like me, you can find some really sweet family cards
. Or
these chocolate-scented, scratch-n-sniff Valentines
(yes, I'm serious! and they're really yummy smelling!).
Express love and appreciation for one another.
This one can be closely related to the first one. My husband encouraged each one of our children to share around the table what they loved and appreciated about each other. Some of them simply read their cards aloud, while others prepared a few thoughtful words to say. But you might want to have tissue ready - in case your son in college thanks you for the washed clothes and good food, for instance
*sniff
Love notes are welcome in our home any day of the year!
Bake something special together.
Create a fun craft together.
Cook up a creative love-breakfast for your family.
Such a happy way to start off the day!
Make heart-shaped....everything.
Well, maybe not literally everything, but at least bunches of stuff. Playdough. Sandwiches (cut out the bread with cookie cutters.Construction paper. Napkins. Basically, plan on an all-out heart theme for the day. Yep. Just give your kids (if they're old enough) a set of heart-shaped cookie-cutters
and see what they come up with! You might be surprised.....
Focus on the true meaning of Love.
Don't let the world falsely define love for your family, but direct them toward the True Author of Love. Go through I Corinthians 13 and other verses in the Bible which talk about the real meaning of love.
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude.
It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;
it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.
Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
My hope is that our family grows in their love for one another - and for their God and Savior each day.
And I hope the same for you and yours.

How to Prep for Fast Family Weeknight Meals
After a long, exhausting day, the last thing you want to do is turn on the stove and cook dinner. Ordering a pizza just feels easier than taking the time to prep and cook for the entire family. But weeknight dinners don't have to be a chore. As long as you keep your pantry and fridge stocked with a few basics, you can make heart-healthy dinners for your family in a flash.
Before diving in, let's cover off on the number one rule. "Start with fresh and whole (unprocessed) food," says Dr. Janet Brill, nutrition expert and active volunteer for the American Heart Association. "I buy the pre-prepped produce, which saves time in the kitchen."
To get started with your own weeknight dinner routine, be sure you have these five basic ingredients:
- Extra-virgin olive oil: Use this as your go-to cooking fat and be sure it's extra-virgin.
- Salt and pepper: Even if you don't own a single other seasoning, these two will suffice. Use salt sparingly.
- Lemon: A squeeze of a lemon is the perfect addition to salads, fish, chicken, hummus, and more.
- Garlic: Perfect for just about everything, this heart-healthy bulb is a great staple.
- Greek yogurt: Natural Greek yogurt is ideal for coating meat and poultry, creating creamy dips and as a substitute for sour cream.
When building your dinner plate, it's more important to focus on quality over quantity, explains Brill. To make sure you are getting a heart-healthy balance, she suggests comprising a plate that is a third complex carbs (like brown rice, quinoa or sweet potatoes), a third lean protein (think tuna, turkey or tofu), and a third vegetable (like broccoli, Brussels sprouts or carrots).
Having salad to start? Brill recommends one comprised of dark leafy greens, tomatoes and beans, like chickpeas or kidney beans. Dress it with
healthy fats (like avocado or extra-virgin olive oil) and squeeze with fresh lemon.
Weeknight cooking can feel like a daunting task, but a little motivation can go a long way. "Make the time to eat healthy today so you will be here tomorrow," says Brill. "Eating heart-healthy doesn't take any more time than eating foods that harm your heart."
To help stay on track, create a roster of
recipes you know how to cook by heart. They don't have to be complicated, overly fancy or even from a cookbook. Use what you have and do what you know. In fact, simple recipes often end up being healthier. (And remember, you can tweak recipes to suit your tastes.)
Here are a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing:
Baked Chicken and Sautéed Pepper Tacos.
Season skinless, all-natural chicken breasts with salt and pepper, sear both sides, then bake for 30 minutes. (Time will vary based on oven and weight.) While the meat is cooking, sauté yellow, red and orange peppers in a splash of extra-virgin olive oil and minced garlic and warm a few whole-wheat or corn tortillas. When the chicken and peppers are finished, add them to your tortillas, wrap and top with a touch of Greek yogurt.
Poached Salmon with Roasted Eggplant. High in
omega-3 fatty acids
, salmon is an ideal weeknight dinner. To poach, fill a deep pan with about an inch of water and add a squeeze of lemon and sprinkle of fresh herbs. Then bring to a simmer. Add your fish, skin side down, and cook for at least five minutes - or until it's reached the level of doneness you desire. In the meantime, cube the eggplant, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast at 450 degrees for 30 minutes, or until the eggplant is tender.
Homemade Whole-Wheat Pizza.
Fun for you and the family, homemade pizzas are easier than they sound. Simply buy pre-made dough from the grocery store or your local pizzeria, top with low-fat cheese, fresh vegetables, garlic and tomato sauce, and bake. You can also add lean protein, like chicken, to create a well-balanced plate.
