Mariners' Museum Holds Rain Barrel Workshop
Learn to assemble a 55 gallon rain barrel that you can take home!
On May 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., you can make a rain barrel to help with home watering needs. In a partnership with the Virginia Cooperative Extension, Newport News Waterworks and the Newport News Recycling Office, The Mariners’ Museum and Park is offering rain barrel workshops! Participants are guided through 55-gallon rain barrel assembly and are able to take home a finished product in each two-hour workshop. Cost is $70.00 per 55-gallon rain barrel. Pre-registration is required, and registration is generally limited to 25 participants per workshop. Get Ready for Summer at Newport News Public Library
In an effort to provide the Newport News community with opportunities for lifelong learning, Newport News Public Library is hosting informational programs to prepare participants for a fun and safe summer.
 
Protect Your Skin! Skin Cancer Awareness will be held on Friday, May 18, at 11 a.m. at Grissom Library. During this educational program on skin care safety, Shelly Carpenter, of Pariser Dermatology, will discuss how to minimize the risk of getting skin cancer, including what to look for when doing a self-examination and understanding treatment options if skin cancer is detected.
 
South Morrison Library, in partnership with Newport News Tourism, is hosting Newport News Tourism Information Session Friday, May 18, at 11 a.m. Participants will learn about local attractions, festivals and useful tips for planning family and high school reunions.

Travel Around The Globe at the World Arts Celebration
Explore over 30 cultures at the World Arts Celebration on Saturday, May 19, from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. around the fountain at City Center. Transport through a curated world tour of hands-on exhibits, art demonstrations, entertainment and culinary delights to tantalize your senses. Admission and parking are free.  

This year’s headliner, the legendary Wailers band, will take the “World Stage” at 7:00 p.m. Steered by famed bassist and founder Aston “Familyman” Barrett, and joined in solidarity with original Wailers’ guitarists Junior Marvin and Donald Kinsey, The Wailers will bring its revolutionary sounds to Newport News. Taking the stage before The Wailers are the Junkanoo Commandos, flying straight from Nassau, Bahamas for a riveting and colorful performance at 6:00 p.m.

Throughout the afternoon, visit exhibits from a variety of countries including Taiwan, South Africa, Germany, China, Japan, France, Mali, Egypt, West Indian Islands, Mexico, Greece, Vietnam, Polynesia, Poland, America and Cambodia. Free children’s activities include face painting, henna designs, and international “make and take” crafts. Families can take photos with props representing a variety of countries from around the world. Come early to snag free necklaces, mini totes and Chinese fans while supplies last. Vendors are selling artwork and crafts from Ecuador, Kenya, Nepal, Uganda, Bangladesh, the Philippines, South Africa, the Bahamas and America. 

Folkdance, music, and martial arts performances will fill four stages. International food vendors will sell food representing Puerto Rico (El Coqui Puerto Rican Cuisine), the Caribbean Islands (MP Island Café), the Mediterranean (Grapevine Restaurant, Over the Moon Pizza, 4 Spices Mediterranean), Asia (Taste of Asia) and Europe (Monique’s Crepes).
