Newport News Public Library is hosting its yearly Summer Reading Program June 18 to July 31. The free program encourages youth to keep reading during the summer and offer events and the chance for prizes for all ages.

The Summer Kick-off will be at Main Street Library on Saturday, June 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be games, STEM activities, a photo booth, face painters, a magician and more! Participants will also have the opportunity to register early for the Summer Reading Program and enter for door prizes.

This year, there are more prizes than ever! Beginning June 18, participants will fill out activity cards which, when completed, will be entered for weekly drawings. Those who complete the Summer Reading Program and turn in their final card will be entered into the grand prize drawing.

As part of Summer Reading, we will be hosting special programs and performers at all four library branches. Pick up a brochure and calendar to make sure you don’t miss out, or visit our online Calendar of Events for details and registration information.

Adults are welcome to join the Adult Summer Reading Program. To participate, check out and read library books beginning June 18. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, June 15
Newport News Department of Human Services is raising awareness of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day which is tomorrow, June 15. Elder abuse refers to the intentional or negligent acts by a caregiver or trusted individual that causes harm to an older person. Nationally, about 1 in 10 Americans over the age of 60 have experienced abuse, which can take many forms, including neglect or isolation, physical abuse, sexual abuse, financial abuse and exploitation, or emotional/psychological mistreatment such as verbal abuse and threats.

In Virginia, abuse reports totaled 27,105 for people over the age of 60 or incapacitated people between the ages of 18-59. Of those reported, 62% of the incidents occurred in the person’s home. It is difficult for people to stay involved in and connected to the community as they age, which can cause social isolation and increase the likelihood of abuse and neglect.

What can be done? Everyone is encouraged to become aware of the signs of abuse and neglect. For more information about adult abuse and neglect, visit the Virginia Department of Social Services Website .

Anyone can report adult abuse. If you suspect someone is the victim of adult abuse, call the toll free phone number 1-888-832-3858. The line is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week.In Newport News, the Adult Abuse Hotline number is 757-926-6329 and is answered 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
