Happy Easter and Jambo from all of us at
Gamewatchers Safaris & Porini Camps !

As we head into Spring we thought we'd take the opportunity to update you on what's been happening lately in and around our Conservancies including the wonderful wildlife viewing enjoyed by our guests, the latest on our Community Projects and also to let you know about some great value offers now available if you wish to make 2016 the year for a safari to Kenya ...

Over the past few months we have been delighted to welcome many repeat guests to our Porini Camps where the Conservancies abound with wildlife. Some of our regular visitors have been sharing with us their wonderful images of life in and around the camps.

Photographer Kamal Varma has been to Kenya three times now with Gamewatchers Safaris. Here is a taste of what he saw on his recent trip (and click here  to view Kamal's latest blog recording some of the scenes he captured at Porini Camps):

Regular Porini guest Philip Edwards was recently back in Selenkay Conservancy  on his sixth visit to Porini Amboseli Camp. The area is renowned for its large population of elephants and Philip took these beautiful photos:

And Soma Dattagupta brought us these images of some of the resident leopards (Pretty Girl, Fig and Fig's young cub) in our Masai Mara Conservancies (to read Soma's intriguing blog - featuring more stunning images and an account of Fig and her cub in "training" - click here):

Baby elephant born right beside Porini Amboseli Camp!

Last month our guests were thrilled to see a tiny baby elephant which was born just yards from Porini Amboseli Camp in Selenkay Conservancy!

This is proof that the Conservancy is deemed as a safe-haven for the herd that has taken up residency.

Porini guests were able to witness some fascinating elephant behaviour with members of the herd gathering round to encourage the newborn to suckle!

Lion Research Highlights Importance of Conservancies

Data published within the past few months by the Mara Lion Project has demonstrated the importance of the Conservancies in providing a safe haven beyond the Masai Mara National Reserve.

Research into the movements of the pride was aided by a GPS collar fitted to one of the pride's females, "Nenkume".

Over a 2 year period her behaviour has clearly shown that she feels more protected within the Conservancy than in the surrounding area.

Bridge-building in Selenkay Conservancy

During the heavy El Nino rains in January and February, the road into Selenkay Conservancy was washed away.

There was great team-work by the Selenkay community as they built a new road bridge to enable our visitors to keep coming!

Supporting the Community
At Gamewatchers Safaris & Porini Camps we work closely with communities living alongside national parks and wildlife reserves to help them derive benefits from conserving wildlife species and the natural habitat.

With our Conservancy Concept, monthly lease payments are made to the Maasai landowners for our use of the land as a wildlife conservancy and we give first priority to the local community for jobs in the camps and conservancies.

Over 95% of the staff are drawn from the local community, and over 1,000 Maasai families are directly benefiting from our conservancies by receiving a regular income from the rents of their own parcels of land.

In addition we support a number of life-changing initiatives in our partner communities, mainly with a focus on core areas of Conservation, Education & Water.

Here are a couple of the projects which have brought direct benefits to the local communities and ensure a positive relationship on which to build the future of the conservancies.

Shoe donation in Ol Kinyei

123 children of Oloibormut School, adjacent to Ol Kinyei Conservancy and Porini Mara Camp, were excited to receive a gift of safari boots, very kindly donated by our repeat clients and good friends Rick and Nicole Goodfellow from Canada

Similarly, a further 57 boys and girls, the youngest pupils in the Ol Kinyei Primary School, were provided with shoes from a donation by our Porini Camps guest Richard Doig from Scotland.

Many of the children had previously walked barefoot but now have sturdy footwear to protect their feet!
Kind donations replace family's livestock after lion attack

Guests and supporters of Gamewatchers Safaris & Porini Camps generously supported our appeal to raise funds to replace a farmer's livestock. The farmer and his young family lost their entire flock in an attack by lions near Nairobi National Park last year.

Porini Boma Strengthening Programme

With an increase in the lion populations in our Conservancies it is important to take measures to avoid big cats roaming out of the conservancy and killing livestock. So, we support the local Maasai in reinforcing their traditionally constructed bomas to help prevent predators from entering the Maasai village and livestock enclosures. The reinforced bomas ensure that predators are no longer a threat to the community.
