Unemployment is low, except for Charlotte's youth
As Mecklenburg County reaches its lowest unemployment rate in years, many businesses are struggling with a labor shortage and job-seekers are finding a wealth of job opportunities. Nationally, the has decreased overall, as well as for minority populations including women, black, and Hispanic job-seekers.

For one group, unemployment remains much higher than average. Youth between the ages of 16 to 24 are having a tougher time getting hired.

Young adults reach for the stars to increase their economic mobility
About a dozen young adults from the NextGen program from Central Piedmont Community College and ResCare Workforce Services participated in WTVI PBS Charlotte’s 3-D Project program.

Next Gen is a Charlotte Works program that helps young adults (ages 16 to 24) facing employment barriers to gain work experience, enter the job market, complete educational goals and prepare for a career. CPCC and ResCare provides the program for out-of-school participants. MeckEd is the program provider serving 11th and 12th graders at Garinger, Harding, Independence, Vance, and West Charlotte High Schools.

Healthcare training opportunities fuel career seeker's passion for nursing
A passion for taking care of others led Tanira Kingsberry to take her career a step further in the healthcare industry. Working as a dietary aide and getting to know the patients as well as the nurses peaked her interest in becoming a certified nursing assistant (CNA) to help her reach her ultimate goal of being a physician’s assistant.

She took the first step by calling Charlotte Works to find out about training programs and opportunities.
