LAA Newsletter & Upcoming Events
August 2011
Greetings!

Every day our staff, volunteers and supporters make a difference in the lives of our clients through offering programs that focus on youth academic achievement, education and prevention, and services to families with urgent needs.

I would like to take an opportunity to share some of our recent program highlights and update you on changes we have made to our program service delivery model.

Youth Academic Achievement:  At the end of July we celebrated the successful completion of our summer academic program with a night of performances, songs and skits, led and organized by the students themselves.

For six  weeks, these bright students participated in reading, writing  and math classes as well as enrichment activities and field trips. The night was a true showcase of their talent and potential and an indicator of the impact of our program as we work to ensure their future academic success.

The LAA will implement a new youth academic achievement model this fall incorporating current best practices in Latino youth education.. The model focuses on building the knowledge and skills that empower Latino students to complete high school and pursue higher education. An individualized approach, the initiative involves working long-term with a cohort of 45 Sequoyah Middle School students, guided by a culture of assessment, evaluation and meaningful measurable indicators. Program components include academic tutoring, cultural enrichment activities, career and college readiness, mentoring, civic engagement, and leadership development.

Inspira! Summer Academic Program Promotes Student Achievement

Inspiring Students to Achieve Academically

More than 100 students took part in the LAA's summer academic program, which is designed to inspire students to achieve academically. During the program, students participate in activities focused on improving their skills in reading, writing, math and science. A weekly theme was incorporated into cultural enrichment activities, focusing on a different topic each week, such as "I Want to Be a Researcher." Students also enjoyed art, field trips, writing self-portraits and physical fitness activities.

Measurable Results & Best Practices

The LAA's Inspira! program is aligned with best practices for Latino students that meet Georgia state standards, and focuses on achieving measurable results. This summer's group of students increased their post test scores as a group by 10 points, for example. Highly qualified, certified teachers taught each class, and all staff received professional development workshops covering systematic approaches to classroom delivery, classroom discipline and assessing student behavior. They also received training on Latinos in the classroom, creating awareness of issues affecting Latinos in Georgia.

Closing Celebration Features Student Talents

From poetry readings to originally composed songs, program participants displayed their talents during a student-ran and student-led closing celebration July 14, 2011. Among the performances were Jack and the Bean Stalk, choreographed dances, and a water conservation skit. Students who showed significant improvement in each subject area - a mathematician, scientist, writer, and a reader - received awards. A Rising Latino Leader Award was given to two outstanding students.  Click here to view photos of closing ceremonies.   Click here to view photos of closing ceremonies.

Message from the Chief Executive CEO-Message2Officer Continued

Community Education & AdvocacyWe hosted a "Know Your Rights" Seminar in June in partnership with the Asian American Legal Advocacy Center that provided information about Georgia's new immigration legislation HB87 to the community. More than 400 individuals attended, and experts in the areas of constitutional, criminal and immigration law explained the legislation its effects on the community and discussed immigrants' rights. As a leading service provider to the Latino community, it is vital that we keep our clients informed about important issues that impact their lives.

Cobb County Services:  The LAA is shifting its service delivery model in Cobb County to an outreach-centered approach to providing services. After careful consideration of factors such as location, transportation, safety, and how to best utilize our finite resources, LAA leadership decided to close our physical office in Cobb County. We will now serve the area through visiting churches, schools, apartments, and other locations where Latino families live and work. We will work hand in hand with partner agencies to provide comprehensive services, and we also have emergency assistance funds available specifically for Cobb County clients.

We remain very dedicated to serving our community, and this service model will enable us to continue providing vital services and programs that are in demand.  At a time when our community is challenged more than ever, it is essential that we remain strong as an organization and continue to meet the needs of our community.

I personally encourage each of you to remain steadfast in your commitment to the Latin American Association, and to give more generously that ever at a time when your support is truly in need. Your donations enable us to make an impact in the lives of every client we serve.

Click here to make a donation to the LAA today.

Together, we can continue to create a legacy of positive change in our community. Thank you so much for your support.

Warm Regards,

Millie Irizarry
Chief Executive Officer
