Happy Holidays from the
Santa Clara County Fairgrounds
December 2016 Newsletter

I was honored to present the
awards for competitive exhibits
at the recent IAFE conference
As 2016 comes to a close, w e are filled with joy over the great year we've had here at the Fairgrounds, and we're also filled with lots of new ideas for the coming year from attending the recent  International Association of Fairs & Expositions.  It is truly inspirational to gather with colleagues from all over the world and learn how other Fairs and Fairgrounds are also continuing to evolve and thrive.

We like to say that the core business of the Fairgrounds is FUN, but the main ingredient in fun is PEOPLE!   Our deepest gratitude goes out to everyone who has attended, hosted, or volunteered at an event this past year at the Fairgrounds. You are the reason we exist!

Best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season and we hope to see you soon at the Fairgrounds!

FMC Staff and
Board President Attend
IAFE Conference

Step-by-step each year we continue to rebuild the Santa Clara County Fair, and part of that process is learning best practices from Fair industry leaders.   One great place to do this is at the annual conference of the International Association of Fairs and Expositions, which several FMC Staff members and Board President, Mary Bartlett, attended from November 26-30 in Las Vegas.

Frances Negranza, Community Outreach &
Little Hands on the Farm Coordinator, enjoyed  meeting Frosty!

FMC Staff Attend FEMA Agroterrorism Preparedness Training

Although our core business here at the Fairgrounds is FUN we can also be an important resource for the community in the event of a disaster.  Just one example from this past year was our staff leaping into action to quickly put livestock panels up in the arena to give some horses a place to call home for a few days when they needed to be evacuated from the Loma fire area.

As part of our commitment to serving our community, we are always seeking to expand our knowledge and preparedness for emergencies.  In November our  Director of Food and Beverage Services, Tom Muller, and Fair Manager, Rich Thomas, attended a FEMA Agroterrorism Preparedness Training seminar in Sacramento.  They learned about disaster response and the key elements of command control that would be critical in the event of any type of major incident in which the Fairgrounds might become an incident control center for the area.
Volunteer Highlight
Jack & Merle Rouleau

Jack and Merle Rouleau are two of our most devoted volunteers of the Santa Clara County Fair!   The pair hasn't missed a Santa Clara County Fair in over 50 years!  Even after moving from San Jose to the mountains up north 10+ years ago, they still make the time to drive down and volunteer year after year. One of the Fair's most beloved educational exhibits, Little Hands on the Farm, was originally started by Jack and Merle and they have slowly built the program to what it is today.  Jack, having been a past Board Member of the Fair Association and to whom the Livestock Auction Arena is dedicated to, also still sits atop the ring each year, encouraging buyers and support our junior livestock exhibitors.

Santa Clara Paintball at the Fairgrounds

Did you know that the Fairgrounds is home to Santa Clara Paintball?  From birthday parties to corporate outings that allow employees to get outdoors and blow off a little steam, Santa Clara Paintball is a bee hive of activity and fun! Building on the success of paintball, Santa Clara Paintball also now offers Laser Tag, Bazooka Ball, and most recently Virtual Reality!
Planning a fun party or a corporate team building event?  Don't forget the Event Center area of the Fairgrounds has great meeting space and delicious catering, and our professional event staff can work with Santa Clara Paintball to coordinate incorporating a little adventure into your event, too!
