Scholarship Applicants Speak Out
We talked one-on-one with a dozen moms to learn more about their struggles to afford child care
Janice had to remove her 4-year-old daughter from a child care center for financial reasons. She said it was a very difficult choice, because her daughter was forced to leave her friends and her routine. Now, she's in an all-ages setting and has begun to regress.
Will this little girl be on-target for kindergarten, which will likely impact her entire academic career?

Jessica has two beautiful children with special needs. She works full time but can't afford after school and holiday child care, so she leaves early and calls out sick a lot. She believes she will lose her job soon if she can't figure out how to juggle her career with child care.
Will Jessica be able to build her career and continue to provide her children with a stable place to live and the additional services they require?

For these families and the others who will apply, a scholarship is the difference between quality early care and undesirable - sometimes destructive - alternatives. You can step in and have a lifelong impact: research proves that every child we help is more likely to enter kindergarten ready to learn, move grade to grade on time, avoid risky behavior, graduate high school, earn good wages, and be healthy as adults.

We need your help to say YES to Janice's daughter, to Jessica's children, and to the children from more than 110 other families who have inquired about a scholarship this year. Their parents work hard and live under immense stress as they try to do what's right for their kids today, so they can have a better future. You can break the cycle and give these children the best chance to build a better life.
Brains Are Growing!

Distribution of our brain-building kits has begun! The funds you donated on #GivingTuesday and a grant from the St. Faith's House Foundation were used to buy materials critical for early brain growth: books, math manipulatives, building blocks, art supplies, instruments, science tools, dress-up clothes, and more. The kits are being distributed to child care providers who serve children from low income families. More than 1,200 children will benefit from the kits and provider training on using the "brain friendly" materials. The entire future for these children is likely to be impacted from these experiences!

Champion Highlight:

This year we are proud to recognize our longest-serving Board member, Cecilia McKenney, as a Champion for Children. The energy and capacity of the Board improved immediately after Cecilia joined in 2004, thanks to her rigorous standards and business expertise. She also brought her heart to every issue and deliberation, evidenced by her empathy with the challenges faced by working parents, especially those of limited means. Cecilia has set the mark as the most generous Board donor of all, and her exceptional support allowed us to create better outcomes for Westchester's children.
Educating Child Care Providers
Congratulations to child care provider Yasnia Perez, who recently completed the Council's first Spanish CDA class and was the first of the 15 students to receive The Child Development Associate (CDA) Credentialâ„¢ from the Council for Professional Development. The CDA is the most widely recognized credential in early childhood education and a key stepping stone on the path of career advancement. Yasnia, the owner of My Children's Day Care, a group family program in Yonkers, is better equipped to nurture the emotional, physical, intellectual, and social development of children.
