Creative Alliance Milwaukee Update

May 20, 2011

Greetings!

This week, the Creative Alliance sat down with Secretary of Commerce Paul F. Jadin to share the findings on the creative industries and recommend that it become a focus for economic development in the region. It was a great conversation! Read the details below.

If you haven't signed up to attend Creativity Works Here on June 8th at 5:30, please do! It's a great way to see first-hand the exciting developments going on in downtown Milwaukee and you might even find some affordable space options for yourself.

Finally, congratulations to the five organizations in Greater Milwaukee who recently received grants from the NEA. See the list below.

Have a great weekend,

Creative Alliance Sits Down with Secretary of Commerce
Creative Alliance Board co-Chairs, Jill Morin and Mike Jones, along with Executive Director Christine Harris, had the privilege of meeting with the new Secretary of Commerce, Paul F. Jadin, in the Alliance offices this week.

JadinThe purpose of our meeting was to introduce Secretary Jadin to the region's creative industries and ask that they be one of the clusters for targeted economic development. The Alliance made the case that the large number of smaller businesses, the entrepreneurship capacity and the creative environment developed made this an important cluster to meet the Governor's goals of more jobs and more business growth for the State of Wisconsin.

Secretary Jadin was very interested in what the Alliance outlined and has promised that the creative industries will be an identified cluster for growth in one of his department areas in the new Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, the details of which are still being worked out. The Alliance asked for the State to consider funding for a statewide creative industries profile.

The Alliance is thrilled to make the connection, and as he said to us - 'you are on my radar screen'.

Scientists & Musicians Compare Notes

NPRNPR had an interesting story on All Things Considered this week: One of the challenges among scientists is to describe the work they do in language the rest of us can understand. That's the idea behind a new program at the University of Tennessee that uses music to bridge that communication gap. Songwriters are asked to take complex concepts and condense them into short, easy-to-understand stories.
