Graduations are upon us!  With plenty of deserved celebrations, many will have family gatherings and parties to attend.  Now more than ever we need to have open conversations with the kids in our community.  Please read the article below as you consider your words...

Main Idea:  New Survey Shows Importance of No Alcohol Message for Teens
Written by Patty Baker on Apr 17, 2014

CADCA recently reported the following encouraging information from a recent survey.

New data from a national survey of high school students shows that teens who receive a message from their parents that underage drinking is completely unacceptable are more than 80 percent less likely to drink than teens who receive other messages. The survey, and corresponding infographic , was released this week by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Nationwide Insurance.

The data was released in conjunction with PowerTalk 21 day-April 21st-the national day for parents to talk with their teens about alcohol. Download the latest version of the parent handbook for tips and tools to help parents start the potentially lifesaving conversation about alcohol with their teens.

This year, MADD will host free 30-minute online discussions throughout day on April 21st for parents and caregivers to learn the best way to talk with your teens, so that they really listen.  Find out more and register now at www.madd.org/powertalk21.

Each year, about 4,700 people die as a result of underage drinking. The Power of Parents program equips parents with the tools to have the sometimes difficult, but potentially lifesaving conversations with their teens about the dangers of alcohol.

From the Executive Director's desk...
I recently spoke with a friend in another state.  His son's addiction to heroin has been uncovered.  What a heartbreaking, frightening time for these friends - who are, by the way, fine Christians and great parents.  How can we protect our young children and teens from such pitfalls?  With man this is impossible, but with God, all things are possible.  Along with spending great quantities of quality time with our kids, we need to seek God daily for their protection and guidance.  Pray with your kids.  Read the Word together.  Discuss how God helps you through challenges.  Parents, we must model Christ in our lives as we make our own good and positive choices.  We are not perfect, and life can deliver tough blows, but our reliance on the Lord is the greatest gift we can give our kids!
