Creative Alliance Milwaukee Update

June 10, 2011

Greetings!

'Till we meet again.....

It is bittersweet for this to be my last communication with you as Executive Director of the Creative Alliance Milwaukee. In early 2008 I became Executive Director of the Cultural Alliance of Greater Milwaukee. I have spent over 25 years in arts administration in this community and am really proud of how the creative life of our community has grown. And, there is much potential - as long as there is a community-wide shared commitment to supporting the breadth and depth of creative endeavors. There is certainly room for improvement in this commitment, but I have hope.

The transition to fully realizing the Creative Alliance is ongoing - we are in this together. My decision to move into a Consulting Advisor role with the Alliance along with starting my own business does not alter my commitment to the success of the Alliance serving the creative community. There is much, much work to be done, and Jill Morin, new Board Chair, will be taking the organization through a strategic visioning process this summer. The intention is to have an outlined strategic direction from which to develop a board, select the next Executive Director, and determine staffing needs by early Fall. Jill, along with co-chair Mike Jones (MillerCoors) and the other board members are very talented and dedicated to a great Creative Alliance.

I love this work - determining the scope and potential of a community's creative industries, helping with organizational transformation to more successful business models, supporting creative education - and I love working with all of you folks in the creative community. What I found myself no longer loving was nonprofit administration. And so, time to follow my passion on a different path as an independent agent.

I hope to continue working with many of you on projects of mutual interest. For the Alliance, I will be working on strategic initiatives as directed by the board. They currently include spearheading their review of framing a new conversation on 'creative education' through a generous grant from Northwestern Mutual; and helping develop the shared creative space at the Plankinton Bldg at Shops at Grand Ave.

Finally, I shall dearly miss the great team here at the Alliance. Denise Lubotsky (Administrative Assistant), has been with me the longest; then Shirah Apple (Program Manager) came along; and then Laurel Osman (Communications Manager) joined us late last year. When you have hired all of your staff, you feel very proprietary about their talents, their contribution and their potential. They are each terrific and together they are superb. The skills sets of these three folks are quite varied and highly complementary. And, they somehow coped with me! This organization is in great hands, and I know that the team is deeply committed to serving you and bringing even more creative value to the community. Please stay connected and supportive.

Most importantly, a toast to all of you for the creative talents you bring to our community. You make this a wonderful place to live, and I have no doubt that with all of you we can make this the Number One creative hub in the Midwest in short order. Thank you, thank you, for your amazing creativity and commitment to a better community. Greater Milwaukee needs you all!

With very warmest regards,

Christine Harris

Wednesday night, more than 50 owners and leaders of creative organizations turned out for the Creativity Works Here open house at The Shops of Grand Avenue.

Creative Alliance Milwaukee, in partnership with The Shops of Grand Avenue, developed the new program designed to foster growth and development in Milwaukee's creative industry, as well as spur retail growth.

Creativity Works Here offers the Mall's resources to local creatives and artists, as well as small business owners. Not only does the program offer unique and affordable location options, but with so many varied and talented people under one roof, there is tremendous opportunity to collaborate and share.

  1. Look at the available spaces and the shared Creative Space floor plan.
  2. Fill out a short survey to let us know how to build out the space and what else we can offer you!Creativity Works Here Layout
Joint Finance Decision to Eliminate WiscNet
The Joint Finance Committee finished up its work on the 2011-2013 state budget on Saturday, June 4. On Friday, June 3, the Committee passed Motion 489, which contained a provision that would eliminate WiscNet, Wisconsin's research and education network, as a department or office within the UW-Madison Department of Information Technology and eliminate $1.4 million in funding for WiscNet for 2012-13. Thus, all public institutions of higher education, 95% of public libraries and 80% of schools now receiving Internet services through WiscNet would be forced to seek these services from private telecommunications providers. The cost of receiving this service through private vendors is estimated to be three to five times higher than through WiscNet.
