Creative Alliance Milwaukee Update

July 1, 2011

Greetings!

Mychoua PictureOver the past few months, we've been lucky to have our intern, Mychoua Vang, with us through UWM's Center for Urban Initiatives' Undergraduate Research Program. This was her last week with the Alliance and we're sad to see her go! Mychoua is starting her sixth year at UWM, graduating in May 2012 with a double major in Sociology and Creative Writing. As a lifelong learner, Mychoua plans to attend graduate school, focusing on immigration experience and ethnic identity in the Hmong and Native American communities. Thank you, Mychoua, for all the fabulous work you've done for us!

We also wanted to extend our congratulations to the United Performing Arts Fund (UPAF), who announced it has substantially surpassed its 2011 Campaign goal of $9.65 million by raising $9,743,651 for its 34 Member and Affiliate Groups. We're thrilled to see this success in our community.

Finally, thanks to Tom Strini for listing us in his article, Seven things Strini's been meaning to tell you. We're proud to be number 5!

Happy Fourth!

More Press for Creativity Works Here
Shops of Grand Avenue has new life as creative hub

From BizTimes, Andrew Weiland and Alysha Schertz

The Shops of Grand Avenue is marketing long-vacant space, especially the space on the second floor of the downtown mall's Plankinton Building, to office tenants.

In particular, creative businesses are being targeted for the space. The mall has formed a partnership with Creative Alliance Milwaukee for an initiative called Creativity Works Here. The program is designed to foster the growth of Milwaukee's creative industries and to revive The Shops of Grand Avenue.

The idea behind the program is to cluster creative companies together at the mall to spur their own growth and provide much-needed tenants, plus generate more foot traffic, in the mall.

Zoo Picture

Since opening in 1892, the Milwaukee County Zoo is still wild after all these years! The Zoo is home to over 330 different species of animals and sits on 200 acres of park land. The Zoo hosts over 20 special events annually, which include Zoo a la Carte and Behind the Scenes Weekend. The Zoo also opened a new outdoor bonobo exhibit, which highlights our conservation efforts with this highly endangered species.
