Creative Alliance Milwaukee Update

May 6, 2011

Christine HarrisLike it or not, turning 60 invites lots of reflection! For me, it has meant deciding that I want more flexibility and freedom in my work and personal lives. And so, I have decided to move on from my role as Executive Director to start my own consulting practice, as of June 10, 2011. I will remain as a Consulting Advisor to CAM until the end of the year to assist the organization with strategic planning and direction.

Jill Morin of Kahler Slater and Mike Jones of MillerCoors, Board Co-Chairs, will be overseeing a new board of directors, along with developing a community-based Advisory Committee to determine the specific strategic direction of the Alliance. Meanwhile, the current very capable staff of Shirah Apple - Program Manager; Laurel Osman - Communications Manager; and Denise Lubotsky - Administrative Assistant will run the operations of the Alliance as a team, working with Jill on a regular basis. There will be no Executive Director replacement at this time.

Thank you very much for your support, commitment and dedication to a strong creative industries in Southeast Wisconsin. It is an honor and privilege to work alongside you. If you would like to read my full letter and the official press release, click here.

With very warmest regards,

Christine Harris

WI Arts Board Funding Update

The Joint Finance Committee voted today on funding for the  WI Arts Board::

  • The Arts Board will transfer to the Department of Tourism as of the start of the new fiscal year, 7-1-2011.
  • Although it will no longer be an independent agency, the Board will retain an additional measure of independence through the ability to hire/fire its Executive Director.
  • 4 program administrators will be retained as staff to the Arts Board.
  • There are now additional monies available for grants and services from the original cut of 73% proposed by Gov. Walker.

NEA Announces New Study that Measures the Value of the Performing Arts and Other Arts Sectors

"The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it," said American author Henry David Thoreau more than 150 years ago. Time and Money: Using Federal Data to Measure the Value of Performing Arts Activities is a new research note from the National Endowment for the Arts that looks at the value of the arts in three ways: time spent on arts activities; organizational revenue and expenses; and direct consumer spending. A particular focus on performing arts data provides consistency across these three measurements.
