Connect with Your State Legislators Today!
On Monday, January 3, all 99 members of the Wisconsin State Assembly and 33 members of the State Senate were sworn in, including many members who are new to the governing process. It is important to connect with them now, to build relationships and to show that the arts, arts education and creative economy are important to you, your community, and everyone.

All of these new and returning state leaders are primarily focused on reducing the state's deficit and creating incentives to grow the economy. Many of these representatives, in particular the new legislators, are also focused on cutting what they consider to be "discretionary" spending.

It is imperative that arts advocates work quickly together to connect with and educate these leaders about the profound role the arts play in spurring economic growth and job creation.

Arts Wisconsin's Legislative Action Center database has been updated with contact information for all new members of the administration. They also have helpful tools, including customizable letters you can send to your state representative. Take action!

smARTpower Now Taking Applications
The Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs visual arts initiative, smARTpower, is now accepting applications.

smARTpower sends U.S. artists abroad to collaborate with youth and local artists in the creation of community-based projects in China, Ecuador, Egypt, Ghana, India, Kosovo, Lebanon, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Turkey and Venezuela. Focusing on community engagement that encourages dialogue, experimentation and creativity, this program is designed to stimulate discourse around social issues, including the environment, education, health, girls or women's issues and freedom of expression. In addition to leaving a tangible legacy of their project in the community, artists will conduct workshops, teach master classes, and perform other outreach activities while abroad.

Interested artists can apply online. Deadline: February 28, 2011
