  • A reanalysis of data from more than 2 million children in Sweden suggests inherited genetic factors account for 83 percent of autism risk1.

    A 2014 study using the same dataset pointed to an equal contribution from genetics and the environment, but experts in the field were critical of the findings, citing flaws in the study's methods.

    Then, to their surprise, the researchers came up with a heritability estimate of 85 percent using an overlapping dataset of nearly 800,000 Swedish children2. That result prompted them to revisit their earlier work. Read on...

  • Brain signals hint at speech delay in babies at high autism risk

  • Some infants who have an older sibling with autism have weak brain signals as early as 3 months of age, according to a new study1. The weaker this brain activity, the worse a baby performs on a test of expressive language at age 1.

    The findings point to a possible marker for language delay, a common feature of autism. Detecting language delay early could enable doctors to treat infants when their brain is most flexible.

    "Changes in the brain occur well before even the most skilled and attentive clinicians could ever pick up signs and symptoms [of language delay]," says lead investigator April Levin, instructor of neurology at Boston Children's Hospital. Read on...

  • My family is a dual income family and we need additional help caring for our 15 y/o daughter who is high functioning Asperger. Specifically, we would like to find someone who can be at the house after school while we commute back from our jobs. It would be 3-5 days a week in the afternoons from 3-6pm. A certified professional behavioral coach would be preferred, but not mandatory.

    Our schedules are moderately flexible and we work with the candidate to create a schedule that works for the both of us.

    My son is 5 and he will be in Kindergarten the next school year. He is currently in TK, and he is doing fine. He has an IEP, and he he is on general education with some support fron school staff. We would like to apply by choice to the following schools:

    Holmes Elementary, Curie PTA Elementary, Spreckels Elementary

    Do you have any experience with any of these schools in relation with the support and awareness for kids on the spectrum. Are these good options ? I will really appreciate your help and comments. Please write to julissa_ll@hotmail.com



    My son is almost 19 and next year he will finish his certificate. He is done with typical academia. He is not interested in formal college. Are there different choices besides adult day programs or college. Employment is an option, however that seems limiting.

    Our groups explore the social cognition and communication skills that support successful and rewarding peer relationships, family interactions and academic achievement. We work to develop better social cognition, including social problem solving, social interpretation, and social expression.

    SOCIAL LEARNING GROUPS
    All lessons are driven by the needs of our students. We look at social strengths and challenges along with age and developmental level and develop lessons tailored for each student. Below is a sample of what students might learn.

    Ages 4-7
    Social communication skills are taught via play-based groups with stories, play and structured activities and lessons. Some concepts taught include learning how to follow the group plan, improving flexible thinking (in order to handle those moments when things don't go their way!), participating in cooperative play and improving social use of language.

    Ages 8-18

    • Reading nonverbal cues (facial expression, body language)
    • Developing perspective taking and the ability to identify what others might be thinking and feeling
    • How to be part of a group
    • Understanding how social expectations change with age
    • Recognize impulses and develop self-control
    • Observe and interpret social expectations
    • Social problem solving
    • Dealing with anxiety and frustration/regulating emotions
    • Conversational skills - being an effective communicator
    • Understand how they impact those around them
    • Figuring out what's expected and unexpected and how those behaviors make others feel
    • Executive functioning skills - planning, organization and time management.
    Who is a good fit for our program?
    Our approach to social learning is heavily language based. Children we work with have average to above-average language skills and can participate safely within a structured setting without the need for behavioral supports.

  • HOW CAN THESE COSTLY MISTAKES BE AVOIDED?

    The common denominator in all of these issues is this question: "How can I get the right legal advice regarding special needs matters?" The fact is, any attorney in California can call themselves a "special needs attorney," or "elder law attorney" regardless of their experience. Forms are available to any attorney or paralegal for "special needs trusts." The skill is not in the tool, it's in the person using it. You need to be able to trust the skill level of your attorney. At a minimum, they should have an excellent understanding of Public Benefits Law to adequately advise you on the type of Special Needs Trust and clauses to use in your individual situation. In California, there are two types of certified specializations that are relevant in this area: 1) Certified Elder Law Attorneys (CELAs), who have Public Benefits Law as the core of their specialization, and 2) Certified Legal Specialists, Estate Planning Trusts and Probate (CLS-EP). While anyone can hold themselves out as a "special needs attorney" or as doing "special needs trusts," only those who have undergone rigorous evaluation and testing can call themselves either of these. Regardless of whether or not your "special needs attorney" has either of these specializations, you should ask them direct questions about the length of their experience in this area, and what percentage of their practice is devoted to special needs planning.

  • We are looking to build a monthly developmental reflective parent community in north county for parents with children on the Autism Spectrum. This once a month meeting is an opportunity to build understanding of neurodiversity and how best to parent children to become flexible, resilient thinkers. Parents are encouraged to share, support and learn from professionals and other parents because there are always new challenges and nothing ever goes exactly as expected. It is our belief that having a support group to think things through and learn together is vital to the well- being of the child and the entire family.     Our ongoing 6-week soccer clinic supports children, ages 4-10, with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to build confidence and have fun!


    Children will learn soccer and teamwork skills in a non-competitive environment. Our soccer clinic is based on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) skills training and is led and supervised by our team of adult experts. Soccer clinic is held each Saturday for one hour with a FREE TRIAL session on October 28.

    • Don't feel like you understand others, get overwhelmed by different emotions or environments, or find socializing challenging or draining.
    • Are overwhelmed by other people's ideas of what you "are supposed to" do in life.
    • Struggle with anxiety, nervousness, lack of or challenges with motivation.
    • Have a diagnosis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), High-Functioning Autism (HFA), social anxiety or similar challenges.

  • What is Mitochondrial Dysfunction?
    Within each cell are "power sources" called mitochondria. In patients with autism and related disorders, these mitochondria may not function properly. This causes a decrease in cell performance and has been linked to hyperactivity, abnormal fatigue, muscle weakness, and regression of social and language skills.

    During the last two decades, scientists have made a connection between autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and mitochondrial dysfunction. In 2009, researchers from Johns Hopkins University produced guidelines for the treatment of ASD patients with mitochondrial failure. They recommended a vitamin cocktail to restore the function of mitochondria, and improve brain chemistry.

  • UCSD Autism Center of Excellence is working with the Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative (SFARI) as part of an exciting research partnership called SPARK, and we would like to invite you and your family to take part. SPARK is an online, national genetics research partnership that seeks to improve the lives of people with autism. Through DNA analyses of saliva samples, the ultimate goal of SPARK is to gain a better understanding of causes and best treatments for autism.   • Parents and Children Needed for Student Research

  • My name is Shamayne Brown and I am a doctoral student at Alliant International University. This study is examining the attention abilities of kids with ASD and their parents. I am recruiting families with a child with ASD as well as families with typically developing children.

    We are looking for boys, ages 8 to 16 years old, who have a diagnosis of ASD and their biological parents - both mother and father need to participate. We are also looking for boys, ages 8 to 16 years old, who are typically developing and both of their biological parents to serve as a control group.

    If you and your family are eligible for participation, you will be asked to come to a lab at the Neuroscience Institute at Alliant International University. You and your child's other parent will be asked to complete consent forms and questionnaires about your own behaviors; this should take you each about 25 minutes. You will also be given questionnaires about your child's behaviors. Only one parent needs to fill out these questionnaires and should take about 25 minutes complete. You, your child, and your child's other parent will complete a cognitive test, which will take about 30 minutes. Each of you will then play some games on a computer. This will take each person about 30 minutes. Your child's participation will take approximately one hour. Your participation and that of your child's other parent will take approximately one and a half to two hours.

    After your child completes his tasks, he will receive a $20 cash gift as an appreciation for his participation. Once you and your child's other parent have completed all tasks, you will each receive a $10 gift card as a token of appreciation for your participation.
