  • Why children with 'severe autism' are overlooked by science

  • Children with 'severe autism' are the most in need of help, yet the most overlooked in research. A new initiative is making them the primary focus.

It should have been a perfect day. Lauren Primmer was hosting an annual party at her home in New Hampshire for families that, like hers, have adopted children from Ethiopia. On the warm, sunny July afternoon, about 40 people gathered for a feast of hot dogs, hamburgers and homemade Ethiopian dishes. The adults sipped drinks and caught up while the children swam in the pool and played basketball. It was entirely pleasant - at least, until the cake was served. When Primmer told her 11-year-old son Asaminew that he couldn't have a second piece, he threw a tantrum so violent it took three adults to hold him down on the grass.

The Primmers adopted Asaminew from an orphanage in Ethiopia in 2008, when he was 26 months old. They had already adopted another child from the same orphanage in Ethiopia, and they have four older biological children. From the beginning, Primmer says, "He would only go to me, not anyone else." That tendency, she later learned, may have been a symptom of reactive detachment disorder, a condition seen in some children who didn't establish healthy emotional attachments with their caregivers as infants. • UC Davis researchers test drug that may reverse symptoms of autism
  • Researchers at UC Davis MIND Institute may have found a drug that can reverse symptoms of a rare genetic condition associated with autism.

The 16p11.2 deletion syndrome - caused by the deletion of a small piece of chromosome 16 - is present in one-third of people with autism. People who have this condition are missing certain genes, resulting in impaired communication and social skills and delayed intellectual development, said Jacqueline Crawley, the lead researcher in the study.

The drug that may help is called R-baclofen. It interacts with a specific kind of neurotransmitter to inhibit neurons from firing, she said. Read on...

  • ADHD and Behavior Problems
  • Why are tantrums, outbursts and defiance so common in kids with the disorder? And how can we help them behave better?

We think of kids with ADHD as having trouble paying attention. But for many of them - and their parents - behavior is a big problem, too. Sometimes a bigger problem. They may be quick to lash out, throw a tantrum or be defiant when they are asked to do things they don't want to do.

Tantrums and defiance are not symptoms of ADHD itself, but they are often a result of ADHD symptoms. Inattention and impulsivity can make it very difficult for kids to tolerate tasks that are repetitive, or take a lot of work, or kids find boring. Children with ADHD can be overwhelmed with frustration, and throwing a shoe or pushing someone or yelling "shut up!" can be the result of impulsivity. They are less able than other kids their age to manage powerful feelings without an outburst. Read on...

  • Parents and Others Looking for Help!!!

  • My family is a dual income family and we need additional help caring for our 15 y/o daughter who is high functioning Asperger. Specifically, we would like to find someone who can be at the house after school while we commute back from our jobs. It would be 3-5 days a week in the afternoons from 3-6pm. A certified professional behavioral coach would be preferred, but not mandatory.

Our schedules are moderately flexible and we work with the candidate to create a schedule that works for the both of us.
Thanks! please contact Dustin at dmcarey@gmail.com

My son is 5 and he will be in Kindergarten the next school year. He is currently in TK, and he is doing fine. He has an IEP, and he he is on general education with some support fron school staff. We would like to apply by choice to the following schools:

Holmes Elementary, Curie PTA Elementary, Spreckels Elementary

Do you have any experience with any of these schools in relation with the support and awareness for kids on the spectrum. Are these good options ? I will really appreciate your help and comments. Please write to julissa_ll@hotmail.com

My son is almost 19 and next year he will finish his certificate. He is done with typical academia. He is not interested in formal college. Are there different choices besides adult day programs or college. Employment is an option, however that seems limiting.
Are there any other ideas or options out there?
    Laura jrschley@att.net

I have a number of parents with whom I work who restrain their children with autism in times of escalation (e.g. physically harming others or self). None of them have been trained (e.g. PART training) on how to do so appropriately like the training we receive in special schools and inpatient units. Does anyone have a resource for parents to be properly trained? Thank you.

  • Fall Social Groups Enrolling Now!
  • Social Comm Specialists

Our groups explore the social cognition and communication skills that support successful and rewarding peer relationships, family interactions and academic achievement. We work to develop better social cognition, including social problem solving, social interpretation, and social expression.

We have options for all ages from preschool to college age students. Below are descriptions of our programs and information on enrolling. Email Janet Dudley at janet@socialcommunicationspecialists.com or call 858-558-9552 to learn more and to schedule a free consultation.

    SOCIAL LEARNING GROUPS
All lessons are driven by the needs of our students. We look at social strengths and challenges along with age and developmental level and develop lessons tailored for each student. Below is a sample of what students might learn.

    Ages 4-7
Social communication skills are taught via play-based groups with stories, play and structured activities and lessons. Some concepts taught include learning how to follow the group plan, improving flexible thinking (in order to handle those moments when things don't go their way!), participating in cooperative play and improving social use of language.

    Ages 8-18

    • Reading nonverbal cues (facial expression, body language)
    • Developing perspective taking and the ability to identify what others might be thinking and feeling
    • How to be part of a group
    • Understanding how social expectations change with age
    • Recognize impulses and develop self-control
    • Observe and interpret social expectations
    • Social problem solving
    • Dealing with anxiety and frustration/regulating emotions
    • Conversational skills - being an effective communicator
    • Understand how they impact those around them
    • Figuring out what's expected and unexpected and how those behaviors make others feel
    • Executive functioning skills - planning, organization and time management.
Who is a good fit for our program?
Our approach to social learning is heavily language based. Children we work with have average to above-average language skills and can participate safely within a structured setting without the need for behavioral supports.

This One-Day Educational Event's keynote speaker this year is: Thomas Pomeranz, Ed.D. - Changing Expectations: Leading the Charge for Change

Change is always difficult, if not a bit scary. Families may fear that their family members will be more vulnerable and taken advantage of in inclusive settings. The irony is they will be far more visible than ever-to their neighbors, the Starbucks they like to frequent, their co-workers, their friends. Providers are in the midst of addressing significant clinical, resource, social and environmental challenges in meeting these new expectations. Tom will discuss the nature of these challenges and approaches to achieve this transition for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In addition he will give participants a sense of vision, excitement and enthusiasm for the work ahead. The spirit of change is to open hearts, minds, and arms to enable people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to have meaningful lives of value, dignity and respect.

Who Should Attend? Individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities, families, service providers, agency directors and support staff, Transition Programs, regional center and DOR staff.

  • New book explores drinking, drug abuse, and addiction in the autism community
  • What is the connection between autism and addiction? Why are individuals with autism more likely to develop a substance use disorder than the general population?

Until recently, substance use disorder (SUD) was considered rare among those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but recent research on this topic suggests that individuals with autism are nearly twice as likely to develop SUD A new book by Elizabeth Kunreuther, clinical instructor at the University of North Carolina's Addiction Detox Unit at WakeBrook in Raleigh, and Ann Palmer, a faculty member at the Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities at UNC, brings together current research and personal accounts from individuals with autism and their support networks to start a conversation about the relationship between ASD and SUD. • MitoSpectra for Mitochondrial Dysfunction

  • What is Mitochondrial Dysfunction?
Within each cell are "power sources" called mitochondria. In patients with autism and related disorders, these mitochondria may not function properly. This causes a decrease in cell performance and has been linked to hyperactivity, abnormal fatigue, muscle weakness, and regression of social and language skills.

    A Link to Autism
During the last two decades, scientists have made a connection between autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and mitochondrial dysfunction. In 2009, researchers from Johns Hopkins University produced guidelines for the treatment of ASD patients with mitochondrial failure. They recommended a vitamin cocktail to restore the function of mitochondria, and improve brain chemistry.

I am a graduate student of Communication Disorders at Eastern New Mexico University. The reason I'm reaching out is to see if ValeriesList can assist me with my graduate research. My focus is how applied behavior analysis (ABA) techniques are viewed by parents of children with autism. To collect information for my research I have an online questionnaire with a 12 minute video on survey monkey. Would it be possible for you to put the survey link in a newsletter or email to reach your followers? This research is very exciting to me, as it will illuminate perceptions of an important strategy in improving the lives of children with autism.

  • Parents and Children Needed for Student Research

  • My name is Shamayne Brown and I am a doctoral student at Alliant International University. This study is examining the attention abilities of kids with ASD and their parents. I am recruiting families with a child with ASD as well as families with typically developing children.

We are looking for boys, ages 8 to 16 years old, who have a diagnosis of ASD and their biological parents - both mother and father need to participate. We are also looking for boys, ages 8 to 16 years old, who are typically developing and both of their biological parents to serve as a control group.

If you and your family are eligible for participation, you will be asked to come to a lab at the Neuroscience Institute at Alliant International University. You and your child's other parent will be asked to complete consent forms and questionnaires about your own behaviors; this should take you each about 25 minutes. You will also be given questionnaires about your child's behaviors. Only one parent needs to fill out these questionnaires and should take about 25 minutes complete. You, your child, and your child's other parent will complete a cognitive test, which will take about 30 minutes. Each of you will then play some games on a computer. This will take each person about 30 minutes. Your child's participation will take approximately one hour. Your participation and that of your child's other parent will take approximately one and a half to two hours.

After your child completes his tasks, he will receive a $20 cash gift as an appreciation for his participation. Once you and your child's other parent have completed all tasks, you will each receive a $10 gift card as a token of appreciation for your participation. For further information, please contact Shamayne Brown at sbrown7@alliant.edu or 619-416-1799. Thank you for your time.
