We Invited Them - Why Aren't They Coming?

SAMHSA's (The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) document on  Strategies, Tools, and Tips for Supportive and Meaningful Youth Engagement in Federal Government-Sponsored Meetings and Events  is a comprehensive guide with many ideas to consider around engaging youth. The goals of the document are:
  • Goal 1: Prioritize gaining youth perspectives to inform programs, policies, and practices.
  • Goal 2: Develop an agency-wide culture that is inclusive and respectful of youth.
  • Goal 3: Adopt best practices for youth engagement in activities, meetings, and events
Many parent centers are working diligently to ensure that youth with disabilities are not only incorporated into parent center events and trainings as participants, but also as speakers. This Guide contains very practical strategies for making it work! One of the most helpful items in the Guide is the checklist of things to consider leading up to the event, on the day of and after.

Outcome:  Enhancing your center's ability to better reach and effectively serve families in your target population.
