People Are Not Cars and Nurses Are Not Mechanics
Glenda Christaens
by Glenda Christiaens, PhD, RN, AHN-BC

In 1985 I gave birth to my fourth child at home. When he entered kindergarten I entered nursing school.  My friends and family were shocked that I would join mainstream healthcare. I was known for being an "earth mother" and avoiding the biomedical model when reasonable. "Are you crazy? Why do you want to be a nurse?  I thought you didn't like that stuff!" they would say. I told them I was tired of discussing and critiquing the medical model. I wanted to make a difference from the inside. I wasn't really sure how I would do that.

When I attended my first AHNA conference around 2000 I felt like I had come home. Whole person nursing care is what I wanted to provide. I wanted to care for people, not "the broken arm in Room 3." People are not cars and nurses are not mechanics. We are healers and partners on shared journeys. I continued to attend conferences and made wonderful, cherished, lifelong friends as I learned how to be a holistic nurse.

As my career progressed I became a nursing professor and was blessed to be able to bring nursing students to a few AHNA conferences. They were welcomed with open arms. In their student journals many of them said, "This (holistic nursing) is why I became a nurse." They too felt they had come home.

AHNA helps me make a difference from the inside. I bring holism wherever I go. I teach nursing students and others the value of whole person caring along with self-care. I talk about and role model holistic nursing principles whenever I can. I have learned to do this by being a member of a professional, inclusive, cutting-edge organization that is making a difference in the world. AHNA has shaped my career and my way of being and I will always be thankful.
Healthcare in the News
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported the top 5 causes of death in 2014 for people under age 80 in the US. Heart disease tops the list, followed by cancer, stroke, chronic lower respiratory diseases, and accidents. Many of these deaths were preventable, highlighting the importance of counseling patients on quitting smoking, protecting against heart attack and stroke, and preventing accidental injuries. (HealthDay News, November 17, 2016)

A new US Surgeon General report,  Facing Addiction in America: The Surgeon General's Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and Health, calls for a cultural shift in thinking about addiction, regarding it as a chronic disease of the brain rather than a moral failing or evidence of a character flaw. The report discusses the neurobiology of addiction, benefits of prevention, treatment strategies, and the role of healthcare systems in addressing substance use disorders.  (National Public Radio, November 17, 2016)

The Federal Trade Commission issued a new policy statement in November stating that it will hold OTC homeopathic drugs to the same safety and efficacy standards as other products making similar claims. According to these standards efficacy claims based on traditional theories, without modern scientific evidence to support them, would be misleading and illegal.  (Medscape Medical News, November 17, 2016) Free, one-time registration required.

In this article experts advise keeping eye safety in mind when purchasing holiday gifts for children and provide other toy safety tips for holiday shoppers.  (HealthDay News, November 24, 2016)

Being pessimistic about life could lead to an increased chance of developing heart disease, Finnish researchers found. An 11-year study of nearly 3,000 men and women found that those who were the most pessimistic were two times more likely to die of heart disease than those who were the least pessimistic. And, while pessimism was linked to an increased risk of heart-related death, optimism didn't seem to have any effect, the study found, nor did it prove that pessimism caused heart-related deaths.  (HealthDay News, November 17, 2016)

A Mayo Clinic report finds that incorporating wellness programs for employees can reduce stress. In New Jersey, more companies are offering these programs as part of their benefits packages, according to Michele  Siekerka, president of the New Jersey Business and Industry Association. The NJBIA conducted a health study of its own this year, finding that in companies with more than 250 employees, 32 percent offer onsite fitness or walking programs - up from 18 percent two years ago; smaller companies are now providing wellness programs at higher rates than two years ago, as well . AHNA Energy Healing Modality Survey to be Conducted in January 2017
Healing Touch In order to better identify the challenges of registered nurses seeking to implement energy healing modalities within hospitals, the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) Research Committee is developing a survey.

By gathering information from registered nurses across the United States, AHNA hopes to determine the barriers, prevalence and learning needs related to the implementation of energy healing modalities for patients in clinical practice within healthcare institutions.  Information from the survey results will be compiled and shared with AHNA members and non-members, as an initial step towards providing necessary resources for the implementation of energy healing modalities within healthcare institutions.

AHNA requests that our associates please distribute this information to their membership, alerting them that the survey will be launched in January, 2017.  Together, we'll be able to assemble qualitative data on the challenges that energy healing modality practitioners struggle with and better devise resources and logistical support to foster implementation within healthcare institutions.

Zika Virus Disease Update
AHNA will be carrying a ZIKA Virus Update in each enews for the duration of extensive information being released by health agencies for health professionals.

Zika Update - November 15, 2016
As of November 30, 2016 there are 4,310 cases of travel-associated Zika infections and locally acquired mosquito borne infections (99%) in the Wynwood and Miami Beach areas of Miami, FL have increased to 185; 36 of the 4,496 total cases were reported as sexually transmitted. The greatest percentage of cases reported in the US is in New York (21%) and Florida (18%).

In US territories (Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, and American Samoa) there are 125 total travel-associated cases and the total number of locally acquired cases of Zika infection has increased to 33,133. The greatest percentage of cases reported in US territories is in Puerto Rico (98% - locally acquired, 98% - travel associated). Puerto Rico has begun reporting cases of Zika retroactively which will result in larger than normal increases in cases.

On November 28, 2016, the diagnosis of Zika virus infection in a Brownsville, TX resident was reported to CDC. No other known risk factors suggest that this may be the start of a second area of local transmission in the United States. The CDC is working closely with Texas and local officials to increase surveillance efforts and vector control activities in the area. "Even though it is late in the mosquito season, mosquitoes can spread Zika in some areas of the country," said CDC Director Tom Frieden, M.D., M.P.H. "Texas is doing the right thing by increasing local surveillance and trapping and testing mosquitoes in the Brownsville area." At this time, this case is not being included in the 185 cases of locally acquired Zika infection cases

Pregnancy and Zika
In the United States and the District of Columbia, cases of pregnant women with any laboratory evidence of possible Zika virus infection have increased to 1,114 as of November 17, 2016. In the US territories, cases of pregnant women with laboratory evidence of possible Zika virus infection have increased to 2,561. Women with laboratory evidence include those in whom viral particles have been detected and those in whom there is evidence of an immune response to a recent virus that likely may have been Zika.

As of November 17, 2016, in the US and the District of Columbia, the number of live-born infants with birth defects associated with Zika virus infection in the mother has increased from to 28. The number of pregnancy losses (includes miscarriage, stillbirths, and terminations with evidence of the birth defects) has not increased from 5 since July. The CDC is using consistent case inclusion criteria to track brain abnormalities and other adverse outcomes of pregnancy that are potentially related to Zika infection in the mother during pregnancy in the US. Puerto Rico is not using the same inclusion criterion, so the CDC will not be reporting pregnancy data for the territories at this time.
