October 2016

Dear Fellow Deans,

Greetings from Garden City, New York!

Fall has arrived. Here on Long Island, the leaves are changing colors, the temperature is cooler and we are attired in warmer layers. The semester is on in full swing--classes, speakers, events. I share here some of what’s happening at the Willumstad School.

Business of Science and Innovation
This month we launch our exciting Business of Science and Innovation speaker series, bringing to campus practitioners with academic preparation in the sciences who have gone on to successful careers in the business world. Organized in partnership with the University’s College of Arts and Sciences, this program has been inspired and supported by Horace G. McDonell Jr. '52, '02 (Hon.), a physics alumnus who became the chairman and CEO of PerkinElmer Inc., a leader in the fields of analytical instruments, fine optics and electro-optical systems.

Scholars Recognized
The School recognized and celebrated this year’s recipients of the prestigious Bender Research Fellow Awards, named for James Bender, the first dean of the Willumstad School of Business. The most esteemed of the awards, for Body of Work, was received by Susan Li , Ph.D., professor of decision sciences. She has published more than 40 refereed articles and several books, given more than 50 conference presentations, and has served as keynote speaker at professional meetings. View Dr. Li's profile.

Overseas Spring Break Study Abroad Course
To make it even easier for students to gain an international perspective, the School is offering a spring break
1-credit course in Paris in March 2017. The cost for the course is built into the spring semester tuition, leaving students to pay only for travel, meals and accommodations. Given the rich diversity of our students, many of whom work and are commuters, this course during spring break provides a convenient way to travel and study abroad.
