March 2018
Dear Fellow Deans,

Greetings from Garden City, New York!

The business of science, fascinating speakers on campus and promoting women in the accounting profession—it has been a busy month at Adelphi!

Spring is here, but the weather gods seem to think we should have a few more days of winter. So the campus is now covered in snow. The upcoming change in the season will bring out in full splendor the remarkable beauty of our Garden City campus, ranked among the safest in the country. If your travels bring you to this area, do drop by.

IMPACT—Alumni Opening Doors
The success of our alumni translates into their coming back to campus to recruit our graduating seniors to their companies and provide a bridge into the job market. IBM, for example—one of the world’s leading technology companies—is a familiar presence on campus. Senior managers such as William Fuessler ’79 (above, right), accounting partner and vice president, Global Business Services at IBM, have been active in returning to campus to hire. Every year we place an average of eight students with this marquee firm. A recent young alumni gathering in New York City was an excellent opportunity for graduates to stay connected with their alma mater.
ENGAGEMENT— Business of Science
We have had a fantastic lineup of speakers this semester. The themes of their talks have centered around a Willumstad School focus: ethics, sustainability and innovation. Our latest speaker— Osman Ahmed, Ph.D. , principal technical advisor, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory—exemplified this focus. His talk, “ Carbon Citizenship and Sustainability: Live, Learn and Share ,” held out the possibility that the rapid digitalization of our society would enable each of us to lead data-informed lives and help reduce our individual carbon footprints.
INNOVATION Student Club Connects With the Profession
Our student organization, the Accounting Society, is a model for connecting students with their future professions. Two of its signature activities are the Fall Alumni Networking Event —where scores of accounting firms come to campus to meet the students and faculty of the department in a social networking setting—and the Spring Volleyball Event , when employers mark the end of tax season with friendly volleyball matches and a barbecue lunch. Both are must-attend dates on the calendars of many accounting firms in the area, fostering close partnership between students, the department and the firms. The society also organized a recent panel discussion on the role of women in the accounting profession.
